Narita or Haneda to Lake Kawaguchiko: Train, Bus or Private Car?

· Updated

Lake Kawaguchiko is in Yamanashi Prefecture, a long way from both Tokyo airports. Compare public transport with a private car, with fares from ¥55,000 (Haneda, Alphard, reference fare) and ¥70,000 (Narita, Alphard, tax included).

Lake Kawaguchiko, in Yamanashi Prefecture, is the most popular of the Fuji Five Lakes, with views of Mt. Fuji from the shore, Oishi Park, the Kawaguchiko Ropeway and many hot-spring inns. It is not in Tokyo proper, and it is much farther from the airports than central Tokyo, so the private-car fare is priced separately from our "central Tokyo" rate. This guide compares the ways to get there from Narita and Haneda and lists our private-car fares.

Trains and buses: expect to change

The usual approach is to ride into central Tokyo, then take a train on the Chuo Line side or switch to a highway bus bound for the lakes. The number of changes, timetables, fares and journey times vary by season and time of day, so this guide gives no figures. Please check the official sources:

For light travellers with flexible schedules, public transport works. But arrival day often means a long flight behind you, large suitcases, a change of line or bus in the city, and then the last stretch from the station to your inn. If the inn is on the lakeshore or a hillside, that last leg needs separate arrangements.

Private car door to door: fares

One-way, per vehicle: Haneda fares are reference starting fares; Narita fares are tax included. Drive times are rough off-peak estimates and vary with traffic, holidays and mountain weather. Tolls and parking are included.

Airport Approx. drive ECO (5 seats) Alphard (7 seats) Hiace (10 seats)
Haneda 100–150 min No public fare — please contact us from ¥55,000 from ¥60,000
Narita 150–210 min on request ¥70,000 ¥80,000
  • Per-vehicle pricing: 6 people in an Alphard from Haneda works out to about ¥9,167 each; 10 people in a Hiace from Narita, about ¥8,000 each.
  • 90 minutes of free waiting at arrivals: flight delays or slow immigration queues are covered.
  • Child seats available: up to 3 child safety seats and 2 booster seats per booking.
  • Late-night surcharge: a flat ¥4,000 for 22:00–06:00.
  • 24-hour service: early-morning arrivals and late-night returns can be arranged.

Note that Kawaguchiko is in Yamanashi, so our "same price across Tokyo" rule does not apply to this route. For route details see Haneda to Lake Kawaguchiko and Narita to Lake Kawaguchiko; if Hakone is your main stop, see Haneda to Hakone and Narita to Hakone.

Which should you choose?

  • One or two people, light luggage, flexible schedule: train or bus is cheaper.
  • Three or more people, or travelling with older relatives or children: the per-person cost of a private car falls, and you avoid several changes.
  • Inn on the lakeshore or a hillside: the car goes to the inn entrance, with no extra shuttle to find.
  • Late-night or early-morning arrival: a private car is not bound by last trains and buses.
  • Want to stop along the way: mention it when booking and our team can confirm a stop.

What to prepare before booking

  1. Date, arrival flight and expected departure time.
  2. Inn name and address (a Japanese name or map link helps).
  3. Number of passengers, pieces of luggage, and whether children are travelling.

Can you provide child seats?

Is the fare per person or per car?
Per car, regardless of passenger count, as long as you stay within the vehicle's seats and luggage allowance. Alphard seats 7 with 6 suitcases; Hiace seats 10 with 9.
