Reach Atami and Izu by Shinkansen and local trains, or book a private car straight to your onsen ryokan. Tax-inclusive fares: Haneda to Atami from ¥50,000, to South/West Izu from ¥55,000.
Atami and the Izu Peninsula are Tokyo's closest seaside hot-spring getaways, but the area is larger than many visitors expect. Atami and East Izu are relatively close to Tokyo, while South and West Izu sit at the far end and west coast of the peninsula, with much longer drives. Getting from the airport to your ryokan is often the most underestimated part of the trip. This guide compares trains with a private car and lists our fares from the airports.
Atami, East Izu, or South/West Izu?
| Area | Highlights | Getting there |
|---|---|---|
| Atami · East Izu | Atami is a seaside onsen town close to Tokyo; further south along the coast are Ito, Atagawa and other hot-spring areas | Reachable by rail, but many hotels sit on steep slopes, so you often need another transfer or a climb after the station |
| South · West Izu | Shimoda's beaches, and the sea caves and sunsets of Dogashima | Infrequent trains; West Izu has no railway |
The two zones have different fares (below), so please state your actual destination when booking.
Trains and buses: fine for light travellers
Atami is usually reached by Shinkansen or JR line, followed by a taxi, bus or private railway to the hotel. East Izu towns such as Ito and Atagawa need a further change onto the Izukyu line, and South and West Izu typically add a bus. Timetables and fares change with season and ticket type, so we do not quote figures here; please check the official sites:
- JR East: https://www.jreast.co.jp/e/
- JR Central (Tokaido Shinkansen): https://global.jr-central.co.jp/en/
- Izukyu Railway: https://www.izukyu.co.jp/
- Tokai Bus: https://www.tokaibus.jp/
With one or two light bags and a hotel next to a station, the train is convenient. From Narita or Haneda, though, you usually go into central Tokyo first, change once or twice, then finish with a bus or taxi. With large suitcases, a stroller or older relatives, that adds up.

Full-day charter from Tokyo
If you are already staying in Tokyo and want a day trip, a 10-hour full-day charter (Tokyo departure and return) is priced per vehicle:

|---|---|---|---|
| Atami · East Izu | on request | ¥70,000 | ¥80,000 |
| South · West Izu | on request | ¥70,000 | ¥80,000 |

Which option suits you?
- One or two travellers, light bags, hotel near Atami Station: the train is cheaper.
- Three or more, lots of luggage, children or older relatives: the per-person cost of a car can approach the train fare, without transfers or hill climbs.
- Heading to South or West Izu: with infrequent or no rail, a direct car saves the most time.
- Arriving late at night or very early: a car is not tied to last trains and buses.
What to prepare before booking
- Date, arrival flight and planned departure time.
- Hotel name and address (a Japanese name or map link helps).
- Number of passengers, pieces of luggage, and whether children are travelling.
