Fukuoka Airport to Beppu: Reach the Hells Before 5 pm

Fukuoka Airport to Beppu: the direct bus needs a reservation, and the Hells close at 17:00. Work backward from landing time to pick bus or private car.

If you want to see Beppu's hot-spring "Hells" on the day you land at Fukuoka, the deciding factor is not the drive but the clock. The official Beppu Jigoku site lists opening hours of 8:00–17:00, every day of the year (Beppu Jigoku). Whether you take the bus or a car from Fukuoka Airport to Beppu, expect about two hours on the road, so your landing time decides whether you get in today.

Fukuoka Airport to Beppu by bus: book first

The Toyonokuni express, run by Nishitetsu and Kamenoi Bus, connects Fukuoka and Beppu, and its route map includes Fukuoka Airport International Terminal. According to the operator (Nishitetsu: Fukuoka to Beppu):

  • 12 round trips a day, roughly every 60 to 90 minutes.
  • Reserved seating only; you may be unable to board if it is full. Booking opens at 8:00 a.m. one month before travel.
  • About 2 hours 49 minutes from Tenjin to Beppu Kitahama, longer in traffic.
  • Stops in Beppu include Kannawa-guchi, near the Kannawa area where the Hells are, and the final stop at Kitahama.

For two people with one suitcase this works well. But on an international flight you still have immigration and baggage claim, and with gaps of up to 90 minutes, missing one departure costs you an hour and a half.

Working back from 17:00

The Hells' official site gives no last-entry time, so we wouldn't cut it close:

  1. Estimate immigration plus baggage claim; it runs longer in peak season or when several flights land together.
  2. Add about two hours of driving, depending on traffic.
  3. Leave time for the Hells themselves. Umi Jigoku and Chinoike Jigoku are separate grounds, not a five-minute stop.

By that math, an afternoon arrival usually fits one or two Hells today, or none, with the rest saved for an 8:00 opening tomorrow. Decide which, then book the car.

Four or more people, lots of luggage

Your Beppu hotel may not be next to a bus stop, and a taxi or walk with suitcases adds a step. A private car goes to the hotel door. If you want to drop passengers at a Hell first, tell us when booking and customer service will confirm what pick-up and drop-off arrangement is possible, rather than assuming the car can wait at the gate.

If your flight runs late, drivers meeting arrivals can wait up to 90 minutes, so a slow immigration queue doesn't force you onto a particular bus.

Stopping at Yufuin on the way

Beppu and Yufuin lie in the same direction from Fukuoka, so many travelers combine them. If you'd like lunch in Yufuin before Beppu, say so when booking and customer service will confirm the stop and timing.
