Fukuoka Airport to Itoshima: Timing the Meoto Iwa Sunset

If you are heading from Fukuoka Airport to Itoshima for the sunset at the Meoto Iwa ("wedded rocks"), the drive is not the hard part. The hard part is getting parked and in position before the light goes. The car park at Sakurai Futamigaura has only 47 spaces, and weekend evenings are when everyone arrives, so plan backwards from sunset.

Fukuoka Airport to Itoshima: fix sunset first, then work backwards

Crossroad Fukuoka notes that around the summer solstice the sun sets between the two rocks, and the blue hour before sunrise and after sunset is also popular with photographers. The good light is a short window, and it shifts through the year.

Check the day's sunset time and aim to arrive about an hour earlier. By car, guides give 35–50 minutes via the expressway or roughly 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes on local roads, depending on traffic. A midday landing works comfortably; if you land in the evening, save Itoshima for the next day.

Weekend coastal roads and 47 spaces

The coastal prefectural road around the Itoshima peninsula is the scenic route and tends to be slow at weekends; some travel guides advise leaving early. With only 47 spaces beside the rocks, a full car park near sunset is likely. A private car saves you the search for parking, but traffic and the exact drop-off point still depend on the day. Train plus bus: fine with light luggage

Per the official access information, take the Showa Bus Nishinoura line from Kyudai-Gakkentoshi Station, or the "Nishikaigan" line from Hakata or Tenjin, to Futamigaura (Meoto Iwa-mae). The Itoshima Tourism Association guide map lists about 45 minutes by subway and JR Chikuhi Line from Fukuoka Airport Station to the area. The trade-offs:

• two changes, which is awkward with large suitcases on a bus;
• fewer buses after sunset, so check the operator's timetable for the last departure;
• for one or two people with light bags, this is the simplest option.
