Fukuoka Airport to Nagasaki: Plan Around Sight Hours

· Updated

Fukuoka Airport to Nagasaki is a 2–2.5 hour drive. Use the Atomic Bomb Museum and Glover Garden hours to see what your landing time allows, and where to drop bags.

Getting from Fukuoka Airport to Nagasaki is less a question of how than of what your landing time still lets you see. Nagasaki's main sights keep limited hours and the drive takes two hours or more, so check closing times first and work backwards to your flight.

Fukuoka Airport to Nagasaki: the drive, and what each landing time allows

Fukuoka Airport to central Nagasaki is usually about two to two and a half hours, depending on traffic and weather.

  • Landing before about 10 a.m.: Drive straight through; you still have an afternoon for one or two sights before checking in.
  • Landing midday to afternoon: You will reach Nagasaki around dusk. Use the evening to drop bags and eat, and keep sightseeing for the next day.
  • Landing at night: Stay in Fukuoka first (see Fukuoka Airport to Fukuoka City and our Fukuoka Airport late-night arrival guide) and set off the next morning rather than driving a long route in the dark.

If you are weighing the train, check timetables and any change of trains on the JR Kyushu official site. With large bags and a hotel on a hillside, it is worth comparing how many times you would have to move them.

Atomic Bomb Museum: best done in the morning

The Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum generally opens from 8:30 a.m.; closing times and special periods such as August vary, and it is closed 29–31 December. The visit takes time and is emotionally heavy, so it suits an unhurried first morning rather than a rushed late-afternoon stop on arrival day. Check the official site before you go.

Glover Garden: bags first, slopes second

Glover Garden sits on a hillside in Minamiyamate. Its official schedule is normally 8:00–18:00 with last entry 20 minutes before closing. From 12 October to 31 December 2026 hours are extended to 20:00 (later on some nights), and from January to March 2027 they return to 8:00–18:00. Hours can change for private bookings or weather, so rely on the garden's own notice.

Paths are mostly cobblestone with slopes throughout, and the garden advises that wheelchair users need assistance. Travellers with big suitcases should go to the hotel first. On the extended-hours evenings, an afternoon arrival may still make it to the garden after dark.
