Fukuoka Airport to Yanagawa: Fitting in the River Cruise

Fukuoka Airport to Yanagawa by train takes two changes and over an hour. Cruise operators stop boarding between 14:30 and 17:00, so work back from your landing time.

If you land at Fukuoka in the morning and want to ride the Yanagawa river cruise the same day, the question is not the drive. It is what time the cruise operators stop taking passengers. The Yanagawa city tourism site lists seven operators, with reception ending anywhere from 14:30 to 17:00 (Yanagawa tourism: river cruise guide). Getting from Fukuoka Airport to Yanagawa takes over an hour by train or by car, so your landing time decides which operator you can still use.

Fukuoka Airport to Yanagawa by train: two changes

The city's access page gives the route: about 10 minutes from the airport to Hakata Station, about 5 minutes on to Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station, then about 50 minutes on the Nishitetsu line to Yanagawa (Yanagawa tourism: access). There is no direct train, and that is before you add walking between platforms and waiting for connections.

With a backpack, that is a good-value way to go. With two couples and a 28-inch suitcase each, switching stations twice and then walking to the boarding point in Yanagawa is the hard part.

Working back from the last boarding time

Reception times from the city site (same page):

  • The earliest operator stops at 14:30.
  • Others stop at 15:00, 15:30 or 16:00, and one runs to 17:00 from March to November (last admission 16:00).
  • From December to February some operators close earlier, and in mid to late February some courses are shortened for the water-removal period.

The regular course runs about 60 minutes and the short course about 30 to 40. A simple way to plan:

  1. Start from your landing time and add immigration and baggage claim.
  2. Add the trip to Yanagawa: about 1 to 1.5 hours by private car, depending on traffic.
  3. Compare with the operator you want, and keep a 30-minute buffer.

Landing before 10:00 usually leaves several operators open. A mid-afternoon landing means checking first, or moving the cruise to the next morning.

Where you board, and what to do with luggage

The regular course has four boarding points within a 5 to 10 minute walk of Nishitetsu Yanagawa Station. The short course has five around Okinohata. The city site notes that boarding points differ by operator, so check each company's map.

The site does not say whether bags can be left at the boarding points or on board, so ask your operator. With a private transfer, tell us which operator you plan to use when you book, and customer service will confirm the drop-off and pick-up arrangement. Your bags can stay in the car rather than going into the old town.

After the cruise

Many visitors have the local eel steamed over rice for lunch and then head back to the city. If you are staying in Hakata or Tenjin, the Fukuoka city transfer covers the ride back. If you also want Yufuin on the same trip, see Fukuoka Airport to Yufuin options. For the airport-to-city basics, read Fukuoka Airport to Hakata and Tenjin.

Booking a private car

Yanagawa is not on our price list, so please ask customer service for a quote. When you book, give your arrival flight, party size, number of bags, the operator or boarding point you want, and where you go after the cruise. If your flight is delayed, the driver can wait up to 90 minutes after landing, so a slow immigration line does not cancel the day.
