Hakata Gion Yamakasa's Oiyama leaves Kushida Shrine at 4:59 a.m. on July 15. The 2026 schedule, special 3–5 a.m. trains, and how to plan a Fukuoka Airport arrival.
The Hakata Gion Yamakasa Oiyama has one start time: 4:59 a.m. on July 15. For anyone planning to watch, the real question is not how long the airport ride takes, but where to sleep the night before and how to get to the course at 4 a.m.
The Hakata Gion Yamakasa timetable
Per Fukuoka Now's 2026 listing, the festival runs July 1–15. The decorated floats (kazariyama) can be viewed free of charge from July 1, and a rehearsal, the Oiyama-narashi, runs on July 12 from 15:59 from Kushida Shrine to Naraya-machi. The Oiyama itself leaves Kushida Shrine at 4:59 a.m., teams set off five minutes apart, and the roughly 5.5 km course takes about 20 to 30 minutes, ending at Susaki-machi. Dates can shift from year to year, so recheck before you book flights.
That gives you two options:
- Want the atmosphere, not necessarily the race: the floats and the rehearsal are daytime events between July 1 and 12.
- Must see the Oiyama: be in town by July 14. A flight landing on the morning of the 15th will not connect.
Landing the night before: bags to the hotel first
Fukuoka Airport is close to the city: 3 to 10 km and roughly 15 to 30 minutes depending on traffic (our Fukuoka Airport to Hakata transport guide compares subway, bus and car). A Fukuoka Airport to central Fukuoka private car straight to your Hakata or Tenjin hotel gets the luggage off your hands before a short night. Fares are per vehicle, with a reference starting fare for central Fukuoka of ¥16,600. A pickup between 22:00 and 06:00 adds ¥4,000, so an Alphard comes to a reference ¥20,600. Fukuoka fares are reference starting prices, and all quotes are confirmed by our team.
Where you sleep matters more than how you travel: if you can walk to Kushida Shrine, you need no transport at 4 a.m.
After 3 a.m., trains do run
Rail is specially arranged that day. Fukuoka Now lists the subway every 10 to 20 minutes from 3:00 to 5:00, special JR Kyushu trains such as the limited express Kirameki 91 (Mojiko 3:01, Hakata 4:07) and the local Hakata Yamakasa from Nogata (3:10, arriving 4:11), and extra Nishitetsu services. Exact times are in the timetables linked from that page.
So for the early-morning trip itself, the subway or a walk is enough for most people. A car adds little here: we could not find an official traffic-restriction area for the race day and cannot promise a drop-off point. Tell us your hotel and plans when booking and our team will confirm.
After the race
When the whole event finishes depends on how many teams run, so check the organisers. If you fly out before midday, sort your large bags the evening before and head to the airport straight after; the return ride can be booked together, with details and a quote from our team. For how much time to allow from Hakata, see our Hakata to Fukuoka Airport departure guide.
