Hakuba and Echigo-Yuzawa are the two most common ski destinations from Tokyo. Compare location, transport and luggage. Both sit in one price zone: from Haneda, ECO on request Alphard ¥75,000 Hiace ¥80,000 per vehicle, tax included, tolls included.
Hakuba (Nagano Prefecture) and Echigo-Yuzawa (Niigata Prefecture) are the two ski areas most often compared for trips from Tokyo. They lie in different directions and feel different on the slopes, but a private transfer from Narita or Haneda costs the same to both. This guide covers the differences first, then the fares, so you can decide before booking flights and lodging.
Location and Transport
- Hakuba: In the north-west of Nagano Prefecture. By public transport you usually travel to Nagano Station first, then take a bus.
- Echigo-Yuzawa: In the south of Niigata Prefecture, served by the Joetsu Shinkansen. According to JR East's official media, it takes about 1 hour 20 minutes from Tokyo by Joetsu Shinkansen and about 2 hours 30 minutes by car on the Kan-etsu Expressway.
In short, Echigo-Yuzawa is closer to Tokyo with a direct rail link; Hakuba is farther and needs more connections. Fares, timetables and seasonal changes vary, so we list no figures here. Please check the official sites linked at the end.
Private Transfer Fares: The Same for Both
In our price list both destinations belong to the "Hakuba · Nagano · Yuzawa" zone; fares differ by departure airport. One-way, priced per vehicle, tax included, tolls and parking included:
| Vehicle | Seats | Luggage | From Haneda | From Narita |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ECO 5-seat sedan | 5 | 4 pieces | on request | on request |
| Toyota Alphard | 7 | 6 pieces | ¥75,000 | ¥90,000 |
| Toyota Hiace | 10 | 9 pieces | ¥80,000 | ¥100,000 |
- Per-person cost (our own division): from Haneda, six people in an Alphard pay about ¥12,500 each and ten people in a Hiace pay ¥8,000 each; from Narita, about ¥15,000 and ¥10,000 respectively.
- Late-night surcharge: a flat ¥4,000 between 22:00 and 06:00.
- No flat Tokyo rate: neither area is within Tokyo; they form their own price zone.
With the same fare, the choice comes down to the trip itself. See the route pages for Haneda to Hakuba · Nagano · Yuzawa and Narita to Hakuba · Nagano · Yuzawa.
Beyond Price: How to Choose
These are angles to consider, not a ranking:
- Drive time and arrival day: To Hakuba, normal traffic means about 3–4.5 hours from Haneda or 3.5–5 hours from Narita, so most travellers go straight to their lodging. For Echigo-Yuzawa, customer service will confirm the drive time from your accommodation.
- Transport flexibility: Echigo-Yuzawa has a Shinkansen, an option for travellers with light luggage. Reaching Hakuba by public transport adds a bus leg. With ski gear, children or a larger group, a direct transfer avoids the connections.
- The trip itself: The slopes, lodging and surroundings differ. Check each resort's official information against your skill level and your group's needs.
- Luggage: Ski gear usually means suitcases, ski bags and boot bags. Choose the Alphard (7 seats, 6 pieces) or Hiace (10 seats, 9 pieces) by headcount and luggage. Two vehicles can be arranged if needed; please discuss with customer service.
- Winter roads: Snow or ice in the mountains can make the trip longer than normal. Leave slack on arrival and departure days, especially on the way back to a flight.
