Getting from Narita or Haneda to Hakuba or Echigo-Yuzawa: Shinkansen plus bus versus a direct private transfer, with per-car prices for ski groups and gear.
Hakuba in Nagano Prefecture and Echigo-Yuzawa in Niigata Prefecture are two of the more accessible ski areas from Tokyo. For overseas visitors, the big question is how to get from Narita or Haneda to the slopes with skis or a snowboard and a large suitcase in tow. This guide compares the Shinkansen-plus-bus route with a direct private transfer, so you can choose based on your group size and luggage.
Where the two ski areas are
- Hakuba: in the northwest of Nagano Prefecture. By public transport, the usual route is to Nagano Station and then a bus. ALPICO Kotsu runs buses from Nagano to Hakuba (some services can be reserved) and a highway bus from Shinjuku to Hakuba (reservation required).
- Echigo-Yuzawa: in the south of Niigata Prefecture, with its own stop on the Joetsu Shinkansen. According to JR East's official media site, the Joetsu Shinkansen takes about 1 hour 20 minutes from Tokyo to Echigo-Yuzawa, and the drive via the Kan-Etsu Expressway takes about 2 hours 30 minutes.
The two areas lie in different directions, but our price list groups them together as Hakuba · Nagano · Yuzawa, at the same price.
Option 1: Shinkansen plus bus
From the airport, public transport looks roughly like this:
| Destination | Route | Changes (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Hakuba | Airport → Tokyo Station (train) → Nagano (Hokuriku Shinkansen) → Hakuba (bus) | 2–3 |
| Echigo-Yuzawa | Airport → Tokyo Station (train) → Echigo-Yuzawa (Joetsu Shinkansen) → resort or accommodation | 1–2 |
The Shinkansen itself is fast and punctual, but from the airport you first have to get into central Tokyo, then change to the Shinkansen, and then switch to a bus or taxi at the other end. Each change means moving ski bags and suitcases, and it is worth checking the rail operator's rules on oversized luggage before you travel. For fares and timetables, please refer to the JR East and ALPICO Kotsu websites.
Best for: one or two people travelling light, or travellers who already hold a rail pass.
Option 2: Direct private transfer
A private transfer leaves from the arrivals hall and drives straight to your accommodation in Hakuba or Echigo-Yuzawa, with no changes on the way. Prices by departure airport (per vehicle, tax, tolls and parking included):
| Vehicle | Seats | Luggage | From Haneda | From Narita |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ECO sedan | 5 | 4 pieces | on request | on request |
| Toyota Alphard | 7 | 6 pieces | ¥75,000 | ¥90,000 |
| Toyota Hiace | 10 | 9 pieces | ¥80,000 | ¥100,000 |
| Departure airport | Time in normal conditions (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Narita Airport | 3.5–5 hours |
| Haneda Airport | 3–4.5 hours |
What it costs per person
| Group size | Suggested vehicle | Per person from Haneda | Per person from Narita |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | Alphard | ¥18,750 | ¥22,500 |
| 6 | Alphard | ¥12,500 | ¥15,000 |
| 8 | Hiace | ¥10,000 | ¥12,500 |
The larger the group, the lower the cost per person. For ski groups, a private car not only removes the changes but also gets everyone and all the luggage there together.
Best for: families, ski groups of four or more, and anyone travelling with children or plenty of gear.
Choosing a vehicle: luggage matters more than headcount
Ski trip luggage usually includes large suitcases, ski or snowboard bags and boot bags. When choosing a vehicle:
- Alphard (7 seats, 6 pieces): suits families of four to six with a moderate amount of luggage.
- Hiace (10 seats, 9 pieces): suits groups, or smaller parties with a lot of gear.
- Ski bags are long: whether they fit, and how many, depends on their length. Please note the type and number of items when booking so our team can confirm the right vehicle; two vehicles can be arranged if needed.
Tips for snow-season travel
- Allow extra time: mountain road conditions in the snow season and at weekends are hard to predict, so the drive may take longer than shown above. Keep your arrival day plans light.
- Late arrivals: a flat ¥4,000 is added for transfers between 22:00 and 06:00. If your flight lands in the late afternoon, you may reach your accommodation late at night, so let them know in advance.
- 90 minutes of free waiting at arrivals, as international immigration and baggage reclaim take time.
- Child seats available: up to three child safety seats and two booster seats per booking.
