Haneda Airport to Central Tokyo: All Your Options

· Updated

Haneda Airport to central Tokyo: compare Keikyu, Tokyo Monorail, limousine bus, taxi and private transfer, with travel times and a per-car fare from on request.

Haneda Airport (Tokyo International Airport) is in Ota City, Tokyo, and is the closest international airport to the city centre. Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ginza and Asakusa are only around 15–25 km away, and you have more ways to get there than from Narita. Drawing on Haneda Airport's official website, this guide compares the train, bus, taxi and private transfer options and who each one suits best.

The four options at a glance

Train: Keikyu Line and Tokyo Monorail

Two railways serve Haneda. The Keikyu Line runs towards Shinagawa and Yokohama, and the Tokyo Monorail runs to Hamamatsucho. Haneda Airport estimates about 15 minutes to Shinagawa, 20 minutes to Hamamatsucho and 30 minutes to Tokyo Station. Trains are frequent and unaffected by traffic, which makes them the most efficient choice if you are travelling light.

Trains do stop at stations, though, not hotels. If you are staying in Shinjuku or Asakusa, you will usually change to a JR line or the subway at Shinagawa or Hamamatsucho, and rush-hour carriages are crowded, which is not much fun with a large suitcase.

Bus: direct to major stations and some hotels

Airport Limousine buses and other airport coaches run from Haneda to Tokyo Station, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ikebukuro and beyond. Haneda Airport's website lists about 35 minutes to Tokyo Station and Shinjuku Station West Exit, about 40 minutes to Shibuya and about 55 minutes to Ikebukuro Station West Exit. Your luggage goes in the hold and you stay on board all the way. The drawbacks are longer gaps between departures and exposure to rush-hour traffic. The airport also notes that some routes are currently suspended, so check the latest timetable before you travel.

Taxi: fixed fares, tolls extra

According to Haneda Airport's website, taxis to most of Tokyo and Kanagawa can use a fixed fare approved by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. The fixed fare assumes the Shuto Expressway is used, with tolls paid on top, and some areas are still charged by the meter. Fares for each zone are published by the Tokyo Hire-Taxi Association. You do not need to book, but you pay per car, so a group with plenty of luggage may need two.

Private transfer: short distance, clear pricing

Because Haneda is so close to the city, it is one of the best-value airports for a private car. Our prices from Haneda to central Tokyo are as follows (per vehicle, tax included):

Vehicle Seats Luggage Price
ECO sedan 5 4 pieces on request
Toyota Alphard 7 6 pieces ¥15,000
Toyota Hiace 10 9 pieces ¥17,000

What it costs per person

Party size Suggested vehicle Price per car Per person
2 ECO on request on request
4 ECO on request on request
6 Alphard ¥15,000 about ¥2,500
9 Hiace ¥17,000 about ¥1,889

These are daytime prices; a flat ¥4,000 is added for transfers between 22:00 and 06:00. Choose your vehicle by luggage as well as headcount: four people with one large suitcase each are already at the ECO's limit of four pieces, so an Alphard may be more comfortable.

What is included

  • Tolls and parking, so the quoted price is what you pay.
  • One price across Tokyo: Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ginza, Asakusa, Ueno or anywhere else in Tokyo Metropolis costs the same. Tokyo Disney Resort is in Chiba Prefecture and is quoted separately.
  • Child seats available: up to three child safety seats and two booster seats per booking.
  • 90 minutes of free waiting at arrivals.
  • 24/7 service, including late-night and early-morning flights.

Which option is right for you?

  • Travelling solo and light, staying near Shinagawa or Tokyo Station: the train is the fastest and cheapest.
  • Staying in Shinjuku or Shibuya near a bus stop: the airport bus saves you a change.
  • Two or more people with luggage, or travelling with children or older relatives: a private car costs little per head and takes you to the door.
  • Families or groups of six or more: one Alphard or Hiace is simpler than splitting across two taxis.
