Kansai Airport to Awaji Island: About 2 Hours by Car

· Updated

Kansai Airport to Awaji Island takes about 2 hours by car; the bus means changing at Kobe Sannomiya. Compare both, plus how tides affect Naruto whirlpool timing.

Kansai Airport to Awaji Island is one of the few trips from KIX where skipping the city centre makes sense. The tourist association's own route is about 2 hours by car: Hanshin Expressway to Suma, then onto the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway and across the bridge (Awaji Island Tourist Association access page). With suitcases and a villa or resort that sits well away from the bus stops, a single car all the way is worth comparing against the bus.

The bus option: you change at Sannomiya

The official page describes two legs:

  • Airport limousine bus from Kansai Airport to Kobe Sannomiya, about 60 minutes.
  • A highway bus from JR Sannomiya Station: about 50 minutes to Awaji Yumebutai, or about 90 minutes to Sumoto Bus Center or Fukura Bus Terminal, run by Awaji Kotsu and Honshi Kaikyo Bus.

That is close to three hours of riding to Sumoto before you count the wait and the luggage transfer at Sannomiya. Local buses on the island fan out from Sumoto Bus Center, so a seaside resort or a hillside guesthouse usually needs another connection. Timetables and fares are on the two operators' websites.

By car: about two hours, no luggage handling

The route given on the official page: roughly 70 minutes on the Hanshin Expressway to Suma, about 5 minutes on the Daini Shinmei Road to Myodani JCT, then the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway. Enter "Sumoto-shi" in the navigation. The practical difference from the bus is that nobody leaves the car between the arrivals hall and your lodging.

Awaji Island is not one of our standard destinations, so please ask our staff for a quote. For a rough sense of direction, see our Kansai Airport to Kobe private transfer, which starts from ¥28,400 (reference fare); staff will then confirm the actual price for your spot on the island. When booking, tell us the lodging or attraction, the number of passengers and the number of bags.

Planning around the Naruto whirlpools

The whirlpools in the Naruto Strait, below the bridge to Shikoku, are what many visitors come for. The tourist association describes them as up to about 30 m across, formed by the tide, with currents of about 20 km/h (Awaji whirlpool page). Tokushima Prefecture says the best viewing is about 1.5 hours either side of each high and low tide, late March to late April is the best season, and spring tides give the biggest whirlpools (Tokushima tourism page).

So the tide table, not your flight time, decides whether to go straight there. An early-morning arrival on a spring tide can reach a morning window after the two-hour drive; if the good window is hours after you land, drop the bags at your lodging first. Boat times and bookings are with the boat operators.

Landing late

Evening bus options on the island are limited, so for a late arrival see our note on Kansai Airport late-night arrivals. If you also want a stop in Kobe or Osaka, our Kobe and Nara comparison helps; mention any stop when booking and staff will confirm it.

To plan Kansai Airport to Awaji Island as a single ride, send your flight, date and lodging through the booking page; staff confirm the route and quote. Other departures are listed under Kansai Airport routes.
