Kansai Airport to Koyasan: Temple Stay Check-in Tips

· Updated

Kansai Airport to Koyasan on arrival day: fitting temple check-in and dinner times, the train route via Gokurakubashi's cable car, and why to bring cash and warm layers.

A shukubo stay means sleeping in a working temple: a vegetarian shojin ryori dinner and the monks' morning service at dawn. Because it is a temple, the temple keeps the timetable, with set times for check-in and dinner. If you want to go from Kansai Airport to Koyasan on the day you land, the key is lining up your flight, the drive and the temple's hours.

The temple sets the times

About 51 of Koyasan's 117 temples offer shukubo lodging, bookable through the official sites of the Koyasan Tourist Association and the Koyasan Shukubo Association (see JNTO: Koyasan Shukubo). Check-in and dinner times differ by temple, and Wakayama Prefecture's official tourism site recommends checking in early to enjoy the full experience (see Visit Wakayama: Koyasan itinerary).

Once your temple is booked, ask the latest arrival time and when dinner starts, then look back at your flight:

Shojin ryori contains no meat, fish, green onion or garlic. If you have dietary restrictions or allergies, mention them when booking the temple.

Kansai Airport to Koyasan by train: a cable-car change at Gokurakubashi

The usual train route is the Nankai Koya Line from Namba in Osaka to Gokurakubashi, then the cable car up to Koyasan Station; the limited express from Namba takes about 90 minutes (Visit Wakayama, as above). From Kansai Airport you first have to reach Namba (see our Kansai Airport to Namba guide), and with the cable-car change that is several platforms to climb with suitcases.

A car from the airport is one ride to the temple gate. The Alphard seats 7 with room for 6 bags; for a bigger group, the Hiace seats 10 with room for 9. Please contact us for a Koyasan quote; published routes are in the Kansai Airport transfer routes overview.

Two things to sort out before you go up

Cash. Temple lodgings are typically cash-only (Visit Wakayama, as above), so get yen at the airport or in the city first.

Warm layers. Koyasan Station is 867 m above sea level with an average temperature of about 11°C, much cooler than central Osaka. The dawn service is held in the temple's main hall, so a jacket is worth packing even in summer. In winter, mountain weather and road conditions are as they are on the day, so leave slack in your plans.
