Kansai Airport to Universal Studios Japan: stay by the park or in Umeda/Namba? Transfers for both, the Nishikujo train change, arrival-day entry, and child seats.
Heading from Kansai Airport to Universal Studios Japan with children, the first decision is not tickets but where to stay: next to the park, or in Umeda or Namba with a daily trip out. The choice changes how your airport transfer works and what you can do on the day you land.
Kansai Airport to Universal Studios Japan: two ways to stay
In the Universal City area. USJ's official partner hotels are clustered in the Universal City area beside the park (see USJ partner hotels). A car from the airport takes you to the hotel entrance, you drop the bags, tired children can go back to the room whenever they need, and on the last day you leave for the airport straight from the hotel.
In Umeda or Namba. More choice, easier for food and shopping, but a trip to the park each day. From Osaka Station you usually change at Nishikujo to the JR Yumesaki Line for Universal City Station, with direct trains at some times (see the JR West FAQ). Your airport transfer goes to the city hotel; see Kansai Airport to Osaka and our Kansai Airport to Namba and Umeda guide.
By train, Kansai Airport to USJ involves a change, with routes and times as published by the rail operators. With children, a stroller and suitcases, every change means another platform. A car to the hotel cuts that out.
Should you go in on arrival day?
Park opening and closing times vary by date; check the USJ website. Before deciding, look at two things:
- Your landing time. Land in the morning and you still have most of the day after dropping bags, so a visit is possible. Land in the afternoon and most families rest, then go in early the next day, which is better value.
- How the children are doing. After a red-eye, kids rarely last long on day one.
If you are staying in the Universal City area, dropping the bags and strolling over to the park entrance for dinner is an easy first evening.
Child seats, strollers and the souvenirs on the way home
- Child seats and booster seats can be provided; give your children's ages and number when booking (see Japan's child car seat rules).
- Count the stroller as a piece of luggage. A family of four with two large suitcases and a stroller sits comfortably within the Alphard (7 seats, 6 bags).
- You usually go home with more than you arrived with, and park souvenirs and soft toys take up space. Book the return car for the luggage you will have then; for more people or bags, choose the Hiace (10 seats, 9 bags).
Late flights and waiting time
Late arrivals are no problem: we operate 24 hours a day, with a ¥4,000 surcharge between 22:00 and 06:00. We wait free for 90 minutes after landing, so there is no rush through arrivals with the kids (see our Kansai Airport late-night arrival guide).
The USJ area is within Osaka city and is priced as central Osaka, with reference fares from ¥22,000 (Alphard) and ¥26,300 (Hiace). Send your flight, party size, children's ages and hotel name on the booking page.
