Heading from Karuizawa or Nikko to Haneda or Narita for your flight means a long drive, so plan backwards from departure. Private transfer from on request (Haneda, ECO) and on request (Narita, ECO) per vehicle, tax included, tolls included.
Whether you have been in the forests of Karuizawa or have just seen Toshogu Shrine and Lake Chuzenji in Nikko, the last day means getting to the airport, and the schedule has to be built backwards from your flight. Both areas are a considerable distance from Haneda and Narita, and accommodation is often far from the station, so guessing the timing is risky. This guide explains how to work out your departure time and lists private transfer prices. For the outbound trip, see Narita and Haneda to Karuizawa and Nikko.
Plan Backwards from Your Flight
- Check your airline's check-in cut-off. Rules differ by airline and terminal, so use the airline's website; we do not quote specific figures here.
- Add time inside the airport. For baggage drop, security and departure procedures, see the official airport information: Narita Airport, Haneda Airport.
- Subtract the drive. From Karuizawa, roughly 150–180 minutes to Haneda and 150–210 minutes to Narita (rough off-peak estimates). The Nikko drive differs; our team will confirm for your accommodation.
- Keep a buffer. Expressways can be congested on holidays and weekends, and winter may bring snow or ice. Estimate conservatively.
Give us your flight number and departure time when booking and our team will confirm the pickup time with you.
Trains and Buses
The usual route is a train or bus back to central Tokyo, then an airport train or bus, with several changes along the way. Timetables and fares vary by season; please check the official sites. We do not quote specific figures:
- JR East: https://www.jreast.co.jp/e/
- Tobu Railway: https://www.tobu.co.jp/foreign/
- Karuizawa Tourism Association: https://karuizawa-kankokyokai.jp/
- Nikko Tourism Association: https://www.nikko-jp.org/english/
With large suitcases, a stroller or elderly travellers, a private car from your accommodation straight to the airport saves carrying and transfers. For a morning flight, also check whether the first train or bus can get you to check-in in time.
Private Transfer Prices
Karuizawa and Nikko share one price zone. One-way, per vehicle, tax included, tolls and parking included:
| Airport | Approx. drive (Karuizawa) | ECO (5 seats) | Alphard (7 seats) | Hiace (10 seats) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Haneda | about 150–180 min | on request | ¥60,000 | ¥65,000 |
| Narita | about 150–210 min | on request | ¥80,000 | ¥90,000 |
- Per-vehicle pricing: To Haneda, 6 people in an Alphard works out to about ¥10,000 each; 10 people in a Hiace about ¥6,500 each. To Narita, 6 in an Alphard is ¥13,333 each; 10 in a Hiace ¥9,000 each.
- Late-night and early-morning surcharge: A flat ¥4,000 applies from 22:00 to 06:00. For example, Haneda ECO becomes on request + ¥4,000 = on request. Early flights often fall in this window.
- Child seats available: Up to 3 child safety seats and 2 booster seats per booking.
- 24-hour service: Early-morning flights and night departures can be arranged.
These prices are taken from the one-way rate between this zone and each airport; please confirm with our team whether departure matches pickup pricing. Route details: Haneda – Karuizawa / Nikko and Narita – Karuizawa / Nikko.
Haneda or Narita?
If both airports have suitable flights, Haneda is cheaper from Karuizawa and Nikko (an ECO is on request less; see the table above for other vehicles), and the drive is no longer than to Narita. Your flight time and terminal still decide.
What to Prepare Before Booking
- Date, flight number and departure time.
- Pickup point: Karuizawa or Nikko, plus the accommodation name and address (a Japanese name or map link helps).
- Number of passengers, pieces of luggage, and whether children are travelling.
- A contact phone number so the driver can confirm the pickup spot.
With plenty of luggage or people, choose by capacity: the Alphard seats 7 with 6 pieces of luggage, the Hiace seats 10 with 9.
