Kobe Luminarie lights run until 21:30. Plan your Kansai Airport arrival: car to your Sannomiya or Motomachi hotel first, then walk to the lights. Venues covered.
If you want to see the Kobe Luminarie, your flight probably won't land at dusk. You touch down at Kansai Airport mid-afternoon, your bags haven't seen a hotel yet, and the lights only stay on until 21:30. This guide is about ordering your evening so the travel doesn't eat the viewing.
The short answer: have the car take you and your luggage straight to your Kobe hotel, drop the bags, then walk to the lights. Don't haul suitcases onto a train, and don't leave the lights until after check-in has dragged on.
Kobe Luminarie dates and venues: check the year first
The schedule moves. According to Hyogo Prefecture's announcement, the 31st edition ran from 30 January to 8 February 2026 (ten days), with lighting from dusk until 21:30, subject to change. So it is no longer a December-only event; check the organisers' notice for the year you travel before you book flights.
The same announcement lists three venues: Higashi-Yuenchi, the former foreign settlement and Meriken Park. Part of Meriken Park is a ticketed area with advance sales; see the official page for prices and where to buy. It does not mention road closures or crowd-flow rules, so for those, rely on the organisers' notice for your year.
Working back from your landing time
Because the lights only run from dusk to 21:30, count backwards. The drive from Kansai Airport to central Kobe is about 60 to 90 minutes depending on traffic. Say you want to be at the lights by 19:00:
- Landing before 15:00: comfortable, with time for dinner and the hotel.
- Landing 16:00 to 17:00: with immigration and the drive you reach the hotel around early evening, just enough to drop bags and head out.
- Landing after 19:00: you will likely get the last hour at best, so consider keeping the lights for the next night.
Immigration and baggage reclaim times vary, so don't plan as if you will be in the car the minute you land.
Why the hotel's location matters more than the transport
Hotels cluster around Sannomiya, Motomachi and the harbourfront (see Kansai Airport to Kobe and Nara). The closer you sleep to the venues, the easier it is to walk home after the lights. A private car from Kansai Airport needs no transfers and takes you from the terminal to your address with your luggage the whole way. Reference fares for Kobe: Alphard ¥28,400 per vehicle, Hiace ¥33,600; these are reference prices and the final quote is confirmed by our staff.
Still choosing between Kobe and Nara? Read Kobe or Nara from Kansai Airport; this guide assumes you've picked Kobe.
Whether the car can stop at your hotel's door depends on the hotel and the traffic that evening. Give us the hotel name when you book and our staff will confirm the arrangement.
After the lights
When the lights close, the Sannomiya and Motomachi areas are packed. If your hotel is close, walking back is simplest. For an early flight the next morning, you can set up your ride in advance; see Kobe and Nara to Kansai Airport.
To arrange your arrival day, enter your flight, hotel name and party size at /booking and our staff will reply.
