Arriving Late at Haneda or Narita: How to Get to Your Hotel

· Updated

Landing late at Haneda or Narita? What runs after the last train, how taxi night surcharges work, and how a pre-booked private transfer gets you to your hotel.

Red-eye and late-evening flights are often cheaper, but landing close to midnight raises two questions straight away: are the trains still running, and how much will a taxi cost? Using information from the official Haneda and Narita airport websites, this guide covers the options available after a late arrival and explains what a pre-booked private transfer costs at night.

First, work out when you will actually leave the airport

After landing, international passengers still need to clear immigration, collect bags and pass through customs, which takes time. When planning late-night transport, compare the last train or bus against your expected exit time, not your landing time. Last departures from both airports change with each timetable revision, so we have not listed them here; use the official route search tools at the end of this article to check for your exact destination.

Haneda: late-night buses, but only a few

Haneda Airport's website lists the following late-night and early-morning buses:

Terminal Towards Shinjuku and Ikebukuro (Airport Transport Service)
Terminal 1 00:10
Terminal 2 00:05
Terminal 3 00:20, 01:00, 01:40, 02:20

Keikyu Bus also runs a service from Terminal 3 at 01:20 towards Yokohama Station (YCAT) and Sakuragicho. The airport notes that these times may change depending on flight schedules.

Late-night buses only serve fixed stops, so if your hotel is not near Shinjuku or Ikebukuro station you will still need a taxi or a walk at the other end. Taxis from Haneda can use fixed fares, with tolls paid on top; zone fares are published by the Tokyo Hire-Taxi Association.

Narita: further out, with fewer options at night

Narita sits in Chiba Prefecture, about 60–75 km from central Tokyo. Narita Airport's official website notes that:

  • The arrivals areas in each terminal are open 24 hours, and every terminal has a 24-hour convenience store.
  • A capsule hotel in Parking P2, directly connected to Terminal 2, is open 24 hours, but may be full on the day, so the airport recommends booking ahead.
  • The low-cost bus fare to Tokyo Station and Ginza does not apply to late-night and early-morning flights.
  • Taxis charge fixed fares by zone (for example, Shinjuku and Shibuya wards are Zone D via the Keiyo Road), plus tolls, with a late-night surcharge from 22:00 to 05:00. Fares are as published on the airport's official website.

In other words, if you miss the last train at Narita, the usual choices are to wait for the first train, stay at a facility in the airport, or take a taxi and pay the fixed fare, tolls and the late-night surcharge.

Private transfer: a flat ¥4,000 at night

Our airport transfers run 24/7. Transfers between 22:00 and 06:00 carry a flat ¥4,000 supplement rather than a percentage, so you know the full price when you book.

Route Vehicle Daytime price Night price (+¥4,000)
Haneda → central Tokyo ECO on request on request
Haneda → central Tokyo Alphard ¥15,000 ¥15,000
Haneda → central Tokyo Hiace ¥17,000 ¥21,000
Narita → central Tokyo ECO on request on request
Narita → central Tokyo Alphard ¥22,000 ¥26,000
Narita → central Tokyo Hiace ¥27,000 ¥31,000

All prices are per vehicle with tax, tolls and parking included, and apply to any address in Tokyo Metropolis. Tokyo Disney Resort is in Chiba Prefecture and is quoted separately.

Other things worth knowing for a late pickup:

  • 90 minutes of free waiting, so a long immigration queue or late baggage is no cause for worry.
  • Child seats available: up to three child safety seats and two booster seats per booking, so a sleeping child can go straight into the car.
  • Per-car pricing: the more of you there are, the lower the night supplement per person.

Four things to prepare for a late arrival

  1. Add your flight number when booking: note your flight number and expected arrival time in the booking notes.
  2. Tell your hotel you will be late: most hotels hold the room, but it is best to let them know about a late check-in.
  3. Make sure you can be reached: turn on roaming or use a data SIM after landing so you can contact the driver or our team.
  4. Check your return flight time: if you are flying out early in the morning, a pickup before 06:00 also carries the ¥4,000 supplement, and you can book both legs together.
