Travelling Japan with Grandparents and Kids: Airport Transfers for Three Generations

· Updated

Planning a Tokyo airport transfer for grandparents, parents and children? How to pick a vehicle and count luggage. Alphard from ¥15,000 (Haneda) and ¥22,000 (Narita), tax included, per vehicle, tolls and parking included, child seats available.

When three generations travel together, the biggest question is rarely the sightseeing. It is whether the grandparents and children can get from the airport to the hotel comfortably. After a long flight, changing trains with heavy bags is tiring for older travellers and young children alike. This guide explains how to choose a vehicle, estimate luggage and budget for a multigenerational family.

Count People and Luggage First

Transfers are priced per vehicle, not per person, so the choice comes down to seats and luggage:

Vehicle Seats Luggage Best for
ECO 5 4 pieces 2 grandparents plus 1–2 adults, light luggage
Alphard 7 6 pieces A typical 5–6 person three-generation family
Hiace 10 9 pieces 8–10 people, or a lot of luggage

The usual blind spot is luggage: medication, a stroller and spare clothes push the count higher than expected. Count the large bags first and choose by that number. If six people already reach the six-piece limit, step up to a Hiace so both seats and the luggage area have room to spare. Please confirm any oversized items with our team when booking.

Prices

The same price applies anywhere within Tokyo. One-way, per vehicle, tax included, tolls and parking included:

Airport Approx. drive ECO Alphard Hiace
Haneda 30–45 min on request ¥15,000 ¥17,000
Narita 60–90 min on request ¥22,000 ¥27,000

Drive times are rough estimates and depend on traffic and destination. For six people in an Alphard, that is about ¥2,500 each from Haneda and about ¥3,667 each from Narita.

  • Late-night surcharge: a flat ¥4,000 from 22:00 to 06:00.
  • Child seats available: up to 3 child seats and 2 booster seats per booking.
  • Extra stops: arranged on request, for example a pharmacy or supermarket on the way.

Planning Around Older Travellers and Children

  1. Haneda or Narita. If your flights allow a choice, Haneda is closer to central Tokyo with a shorter drive, which is easier on older travellers. See Tokyo–Narita for a comparison. Fares and schedules are set by the airlines.
  2. Allow time for arrivals. The 90 minutes of free waiting covers typical immigration and baggage collection. If someone moves slowly, mention it when booking so our team can plan around it.
  3. Late arrivals are fine. The service is available 24 hours, so there is no need to rush to catch a last train.
  4. State child seats in advance. Give the children's ages and heights when booking, along with the number of seats or boosters.

We make no promises here about special needs such as wheelchairs or boarding assistance. Please describe them to our team before booking so they can confirm what is possible.

What to Have Ready When Booking

  1. Arrival or departure date, flight number and time.
  2. Pick-up or drop-off address: hotel name and address.
  3. Numbers of adults, older travellers and children, plus children's ages.
  4. Luggage count, plus large items such as strollers.
  5. A contact number so the driver can confirm the meeting point.

FAQ

Which vehicle suits a three-generation family of 6 arriving in Tokyo?
For 6 people with up to 6 pieces of luggage, an Alphard (7 seats, 6 pieces of luggage) works. For more luggage or a group of 8–10, choose a Hiace (10 seats, 9 pieces). Pricing is per vehicle, not per person. Please confirm unusually large items with our team.
How much is an airport transfer into central Tokyo for a family?
One-way, per vehicle, tax included, the same price anywhere in Tokyo: Haneda Alphard ¥15,000 and Hiace ¥17,000; Narita Alphard ¥22,000 and Hiace ¥27,000. Tolls and parking are included. All quotes are subject to confirmation by our staff.
Can you provide child seats?
Yes. Child safety seats and booster seats are available. Each booking allows up to 3 child seats and 2 booster seats; just state the quantity when booking.
Can you handle a late-night arrival when the grandparents need rest?
Yes. The service runs 24 hours. A flat ¥4,000 surcharge applies from 22:00 to 06:00, for example Haneda Alphard ¥15,000 + ¥4,000 = ¥19,000 (tax included, per vehicle).
How long will the driver wait while we clear immigration and collect bags?
Airport pickups include 90 minutes of free waiting. Please ask our team at booking how anything beyond 90 minutes is handled.
