Narita to Hitachi Seaside Park: Nemophila and Kochia Trips

Narita to Hitachi Seaside Park is about 2–2.5 hours by car. Nemophila and kochia seasons, the route and car parks, train-plus-bus trade-offs, and arrival-day plans.

Travellers add Hitachi Seaside Park for the blue hills of nemophila in spring and the red kochia in autumn. But it sits in Ibaraki, and Narita to Hitachi Seaside Park is a long way, as is the trip from central Tokyo, so the real question is whether to go on arrival day or sleep in Tokyo first, and how much of the day the road will eat.

Pick the season first

According to the park's official site:

  • Nemophila is listed for April to May.
  • Kochia grows on Miharashi Hill: green from mid-August to late September, red around mid-October, russet in late October, and golden from late October into early November.

The park notes that timing changes with each year's weather. Closer to your trip, check the flower status page rather than relying on last year's dates.

Narita to Hitachi Seaside Park by car

The park's car access page directs drivers coming from Tokyo or Utsunomiya onto the Kita-Kanto Expressway and the Hitachi Naka Toll Road; Hitachi Kaihin IC is right next to the park. Your driver chooses the actual route on the day.

From Narita, allow roughly 2 to 2.5 hours depending on traffic; weekends and flower season can be longer, so don't schedule your landing and park entry back to back. Published routes from the airport are in the Narita Airport transfer routes overview.

Car parks and traffic

The official car parks are Kaihin-guchi, West and South, plus a temporary car park open only for limited periods. The park says:

  • Surrounding roads may be congested at busy times, so consider public transport.
  • When Kaihin-guchi is crowded, use the West, South or temporary lots.

Which gate you are dropped at and where the car waits is decided on site by the driver; if you want a specific entrance (say, to head straight for the hill), tell us when booking and our team will confirm the arrangement.

Train plus bus: is it worth it?

The park's train and bus page lists:

  • About 85 minutes by JR Joban Line limited express from Tokyo Station to Katsuta; then a bus from Katsuta East Exit Stop 2, about 15 minutes to the West Gate (about 30 minutes to the South Gate).
  • A bus from Narita Airport to Katsuta West Exit takes about 2 hours 30 minutes.

For one person with a light bag staying in Tokyo, train plus bus is fine. With large suitcases just off the plane, or three or four people, the transfers and flower-season bus queues get tiring. A private car keeps the luggage on board while you walk in light.

Arrival day, straight from the airport?

It can work, with two conditions:

  1. Opening hours are as the park announces for the day. Allow at least 2 hours from the airport; a landing in the afternoon will usually miss it.
  2. You will walk a lot inside, so suitcases shouldn't come along. Tell us your expected stay and whether the car should wait, and our team will confirm the arrangement.

An easier plan is to check in to Tokyo first and go the next morning (see Narita Airport to central Tokyo and our Narita Airport to Tokyo transport guide), with no rush back to the airport that night. For the return, the park to Narita is also a long drive; count back from your check-in time and avoid the evening exit rush.
