Narita Airport to Mito Kairakuen: Plum Festival Trip

Narita Airport to Mito Kairakuen: the temporary station is down-line only, the return starts at Mito Station, and a private car keeps your luggage with you.

Mito's Kairakuen is one of Japan's three great gardens, and its plum festival in February and March is the reason many visitors fly in at this time of year. If you want to see Mito Kairakuen straight from Narita Airport, the first decision is whether to go on arrival day or sleep in Tokyo first: Mito is in Ibaraki, not on the Tokyo side of the airport.

Check this year's festival dates first

The 2026 Mito Plum Festival ran from 11 February to 22 March, with Kairakuen and Kodokan as the venues. Dates and entry arrangements shift each year, so read the Kairakuen news page before you book flights rather than copying last year's schedule.

How long from Narita to Mito Kairakuen?

There is no direct train. You change onto the Joban Line for Mito, then take a bus or walk, which means several changes with suitcases; check current timetables on JR East's route search.

By private car from Narita, allow roughly 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on traffic, and longer on festival weekends and holidays, so don't schedule landing and park entry back to back. Mito is not on our public price list, so please contact us for a quote. Other departures are in the Narita Airport routes overview.

The temporary station only works one way

The Joban Line's Kairakuen Station beside the garden opens for the festival only. According to JR East:

  • Only down-line limited express and local trains (toward Mito) stop; up-line trains do not.
  • Stops run about 9:48 to 16:33, and only on listed days, for example 11, 14, 15 and 21–28 February and 1–8, 14, 15 and 20–22 March (confirm against JR East's notice for the year).
  • The special "Mito Kairakuen-go" train is also down-line only; for the return you board at Mito Station.

Getting there by train is easy; getting back means walking or taking a bus to Mito Station and changing again toward Tokyo or the airport, the worst part with large suitcases. A private car keeps the luggage on board and takes you straight to your hotel. Which gate you are dropped at and whether the car waits is arranged when you book; our team will confirm it.

Kobuntei's closing time sets your arrival time

The official Kairakuen site lists:

  • Garden hours of 6:00 to 19:00 from mid-February through 30 September.
  • During the plum festival, Kobuntei generally closes at 17:00, so arrive before then if you want to go inside.
  • The South Gate is normally closed and opens only during the festival.
  • Car parks at the Front Gate and Sakurayama Nos. 1–3; for the festival the site asks visitors to check its news page for how the Front Gate car park is used.

To see Kobuntei comfortably, aim to enter before 3 p.m. A flight landing before noon can still make it; a late-afternoon arrival leaves time for the blossoms only, and sleeping in Tokyo first is the better plan.

Arrival day or the next morning?

Going straight from the airport suits a morning arrival, two or three travellers and modest luggage. Land in the afternoon or later and go to your Tokyo hotel first (see Narita Airport to Tokyo), then set off early the next day, which is calmer and avoids the evening return traffic.

For other blossom seasons, see our cherry blossom season transfer tips. Once dates, group size and luggage are settled, you can send your request through the booking page.
