Heading from Narita or Haneda to Karuizawa or Nikko? This guide compares trains and buses with a private car and lists transfer prices: Haneda ECO on request and Narita ECO on request per vehicle, tax included.
Karuizawa and Nikko are both popular destinations from Tokyo, but they lie in opposite directions. Karuizawa, in Nagano Prefecture, is known as a summer retreat with Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza and a large outlet mall. Nikko, in Tochigi Prefecture, is known for Toshogu Shrine and Lake Chuzenji. Neither is next to the airport, and both involve more travel once you arrive, so the way you get there makes a real difference when you have luggage. This guide compares trains, buses and a private car, and lists direct transfer prices from Narita and Haneda.
What the journey to each looks like
- Karuizawa: There are stations near the town centre and the outlet mall, but many villas, resort hotels and inns sit in wooded areas some distance from a station, so you often need a further bus or taxi after the train.
- Nikko: The Toshogu area and Lake Chuzenji are some distance apart, and lakeside hotels and inns are not next to a station, so you also change again on arrival.
Timetables, fares and seasonal changes for trains and buses vary, so please check the operators' official sites. We do not quote specific figures here:

Train and bus vs private car
| Train and bus | Private car | |
|---|---|---|
| Transfers | Airport into central Tokyo, then a bullet train or limited express, then often a bus or taxi to your accommodation | None; airport straight to your accommodation |
| Luggage | You carry it yourself through platforms and stairs | Stays in the car throughout |
| Pricing | Per person; see operators' sites for fares | Per vehicle, so more passengers means a lower cost per person |
| Flexibility | Tied to timetables; last services limit arrival times | Leave as soon as you arrive, with no timetable limits |
Note that both areas sit at higher elevations than Tokyo, so snow or icy roads are possible in winter. Actual journey times depend on weather and traffic, so leave some slack in your plans.

How to choose
- One or two travellers, light luggage, no rush: Trains and buses cost less.
- Three or more, or travelling with children or older relatives: The cost per person gets close to the train, and you avoid several changes.
- Staying in the hills or by the lake: A car takes you to the door and saves the onward connection from the station.
- Arriving late at night or very early: You may miss the last trains and buses; a private car is available around the clock.
- Haneda or Narita: If both airports have suitable flights, Haneda is the cheaper option to both destinations. See our Narita vs Haneda comparison for more.
What to prepare before booking
