New Chitose to Rusutsu: Late Arrival When the Bus Won't Fit

If your flight reaches New Chitose after about 4 p.m., Rusutsu's official airport bus may not connect with it. That doesn't mean an extra night in Sapporo — it just means a different way from New Chitose to Rusutsu.

Three limits of the official bus

Rusutsu Resort's website lists its airport bus (BIGRUNS BUS) with a few conditions that shape your plans:

• Book early: online reservations close at 24:00, seven days before travel. Changing flights late or booking late can leave you without a seat.
• A latest-arrival cutoff: in winter, the bus connects with domestic flights arriving by 16:15 and international flights arriving by 15:20. For later arrivals the site suggests other transport.
• A seasonal calendar: winter 2026–27 services start on 28 November, and the services marked with an asterisk don't begin until 19 December. Early-season trips need extra care.

The official travel time is about 120 minutes; fares are as published by the resort. Details change each season, so check the official shuttle page before you book.

New Chitose to Rusutsu by private car: evening or night arrivals

A private car isn't tied to a bus timetable. The driver meets you at the airport and takes you to your Rusutsu lodging. A few things to plan around:

• We follow your flight, not a timetable: after immigration and baggage claim on an international arrival, our 90 minutes of free waiting for airport pickups is there for you. If the flight runs late, let us know the flight number.
• Landing after 10 p.m.: transfers between 22:00 and 06:00 carry a ¥4,000 surcharge. Mountain roads can be icy at night and the drive will likely take longer than in daylight, so confirm late check-in with your lodging (more in late-night arrival at New Chitose: getting to Sapporo or Niseko).
• Winter drive times are a range: the official bus takes about two hours, and in snow a car usually takes longer. Keep your first evening free of commitments.

Ski gear: count the pieces

Rusutsu guests arrive loaded with equipment. The Alphard holds 6 standard suitcases and the Hiace 9, but ski bags are longer than suitcases, so how many fit depends on their size. When booking, please note:

1. how many skis or snowboards, and whether they're bagged;
2. whether boots and helmets are separate or packed in suitcases;
3. whether you have a stroller. Child seats and booster cushions are available — tell us ages and quantities when booking.

Don't forget the return leg

The bus back must be reserved as well and matched to your flight. For an afternoon departure in winter, a private car can be timed backwards from your flight rather than fitted to fixed departures.
