New Chitose Airport is in Chitose City, some distance from central Sapporo. Most travellers choose between the train, an airport bus and a private transfer. The train is frequent and predictable, a bus keeps luggage in the hold, and a private car goes from the arrivals hall to your hotel door. This guide compares the three on transfers, luggage and winter conditions, and lists reference prices for a private car.
The three options at a glance
| Option | Key points | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| JR Rapid Airport | Direct from the airport station to Sapporo Station, unaffected by road conditions | Light luggage, hotel near Sapporo Station |
| Airport bus | Runs to set stops in the city; luggage goes under the bus. Timetables and stops are set by the bus operator | Budget-minded travellers with moderate luggage |
| Private transfer | Airport to hotel door, no changes | Families, groups, heavy luggage, winter travel |
Train and bus timetables and fares change, so please check the operators' announcements. Links are at the end of this article.
JR train: predictable, but you carry your own bags
According to ANA's airport guide, the JR Rapid Airport takes about 37 minutes from New Chitose Airport Station to Sapporo Station. The train is not affected by snow-related road congestion, which is its main advantage.
If your hotel is around Odori or Susukino, you will usually still need a subway ride or a walk after reaching Sapporo Station. In winter, icy pavements make pulling a large suitcase tiring. Please check fares and last-train times with JR Hokkaido.
Airport bus: luggage in the hold, but fixed stops
A bus keeps your luggage out of the carriage and off the platform stairs. Because it serves fixed stops, you may still need to walk or transfer if your hotel is not near one. Please check the bus operator for current timetables, boarding points and fares.
Private transfer: door to door, especially useful in winter
A private car takes you straight from New Chitose Airport to your hotel in central Sapporo, normally in about 1 to 1.5 hours. Reference prices per vehicle are below. They are reference starting prices and are not stated as tax-inclusive; final amounts are confirmed by customer service.
| Destination | ECO (5 seats / 4 bags) | Alphard (7 seats / 6 bags) | Hiace (10 seats / 9 bags) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central Sapporo | from on request | from ¥27,500 | from ¥34,400 |
Prices are per vehicle, not per person, so the cost per head falls as your group grows. Tolls and parking are included, and child seats are available.
Where to stay in central Sapporo
Hotels cluster in three areas:
- Around Sapporo Station: the transport hub, easiest for trains and buses.
- Around Odori Park: shopping and underground malls, and the site of the winter snow festival.
- Around Susukino: dining and nightlife, with a high density of hotels.
Please give the full hotel name and address when booking. Traffic is heavier in these areas, and winter snow along the kerb can change where passengers can get out, so our team will confirm the drop-off point with you.
Winter road conditions: leave extra time
When it snows in Hokkaido, roads are slippery and visibility drops, so vehicles slow down and journeys usually take longer than in normal conditions. We suggest:
- Do not schedule tight plans on the day of arrival, such as appointments within two hours of landing.
- On departure, allow for check-in and security as well as the drive, and leave earlier on snowy days.
Which one should you choose?
| Situation | Suggestion |
|---|---|
| 1–2 people, light luggage, staying near Sapporo Station | JR train |
| 3 or more people, or travelling with elderly relatives or children | Private transfer |
| Heavy luggage, or snowy weather | Private transfer |
| Late-night or early-morning arrival | Private transfer (24-hour service; ¥4,000 surcharge from 22:00 to 06:00) |
