New Chitose to Hoshino Tomamu for the Unkai Terrace: last gondola up at 7:00 or 8:00, entry-time reservations from 2026, why you must sleep there, train vs private car.
If you want to fly into New Chitose and see Tomamu's sea of clouds, the tricky part is not the road but the clock. The Unkai Terrace can only be reached by gondola, and the last ascending boarding is before 8 a.m. That means you should sleep at Tomamu the night you land. This guide covers the landing-day trip and the early-morning ride up.
Check the Unkai Terrace hours before booking flights
The resort's Unkai Terrace page (2026 season: 13 May to 13 October) lists the last ascending boarding time for three periods:
- 13-31 May: 7:00
- 1 June-31 August: 8:00
- 1 September-13 October: 8:00
The page also says you cannot walk or drive to the terrace; the gondola from the mountain base is the only route. Guests at Tomamu The Tower or Risonare Tomamu can use their hotel's shuttle bus; day visitors follow the signs to the Resort Center.
After the 2026 season, the resort lists 2027 as 13 May to 17 October, with the gondola in maintenance closure for now. Dates and hours change each year, so check again before you commit. (Source: Hoshino Resorts Tomamu, Unkai Terrace, in Japanese.)
Reservations are for entry time; tickets are separate
The same page says that from the 2026 season, advance reservations for entry times were introduced to ease crowding, and links to a reservation page. Gondola tickets are bought separately at the ticket desk in the Resort Center, so a reservation is not the same as a ticket. The page does not say whether reservations continue in 2027, so check the latest notice.
It also states that the cloud sea does not appear every day and the gondola may stop in bad weather. Plan two mornings rather than gambling on one.
Landing day: where the train and the car each cost you effort
By train. According to the resort, only limited express trains stop at Tomamu Station and every seat is reserved. There is no ticket window at the station, so buy ahead through JR East's reservation site or at an airport or staffed station; reserved-seat machines in Tomamu The Tower do not accept cash. After the station, the resort shuttle takes about 5 minutes to The Tower and about 10 minutes to Risonare. Check timetables and fares on JR Hokkaido. With suitcases right off a flight, that is a ticket purchase, a change of train, a platform wait and a shuttle, with your bags lifted at each step.
By private car. The car runs from New Chitose to the hotel entrance with no changes, so luggage is loaded once and unloaded once. Tomamu is not on our published price list, so please ask customer service for a quote; the drive time varies with traffic and season, and you tell us your arrival time when booking so customer service can confirm the arrangement. With older parents or small children, the direct run saves energy.
A two-night plan you can copy
Suppose you land in the morning and stay two nights:
- Go straight to the hotel on landing day, rest in the afternoon, and confirm your entry-time reservation for the next day.
- On the first morning, take the hotel shuttle early enough for that season's last boarding (7:00 or 8:00).
- If the clouds do not show, try again the second morning, then move on.
If your flight arrives very late, first read late-night arrivals at New Chitose and decide whether the first night is better spent in Sapporo.
Heading on to Furano
Tomamu lies on the inland route toward Furano. If that is your next stop, see New Chitose to Furano and the New Chitose-Furano transfer page. Tell us about the connection when you book and customer service will confirm it.
Once your dates and hotel are fixed, put your flight, party size and luggage into our booking page and customer service will reply with the vehicle and quote.
FAQ
- Can I land at New Chitose and see the Tomamu sea of clouds the next morning?
- Yes, but you need to be sleeping at Tomamu that night. The Unkai Terrace is reachable only by gondola, and the resort lists the last ascending boarding as 7:00 (13-31 May) or 8:00 (1 June-13 October), so an early start from Sapporo or the airport will not make it.
- Do I need to reserve for Unkai Terrace?
- The resort says that from the 2026 season it introduced advance reservations for entry times to ease crowding, while gondola tickets are bought separately at the Resort Center ticket desk. Check the official site to see whether this continues in 2027.
- What should I know about taking the train to Tomamu Station?
- Per the resort, only limited express trains stop there and every seat is reserved. There is no ticket window at the station; buy in advance through JR East's reservation site or use the reserved-seat machines in Tomamu The Tower, which do not take cash. Timetables and fares are on JR Hokkaido's site.
- How is a private transfer from New Chitose to Tomamu quoted?
- Tomamu is not on our published price list, so please ask customer service for a quote. When you book, tell us whether you are staying at The Tower or Risonare, your arrival time, and your party and luggage.
- Is the sea of clouds visible every day?
- No. The resort says the cloud sea does not appear every day and the gondola can pause in poor weather, so two mornings give you a better chance than one.
