Rent a car in Japan or hire a private car with a driver? A Tokyo day charter is on request (ECO), ¥45,000 (Alphard) or ¥50,000 (Hiace), tolls and parking included. Compare effort and cost to choose.
When planning a trip to Japan, many travellers ask whether to rent a car and drive, or hire a private car with a driver. Neither is simply better; the difference is who handles the driving, the navigation and the parking. This guide puts both side by side so you can decide.
Self-drive vs private charter
| Item | Self-drive rental | Private car with driver |
|---|---|---|
| Who drives | You | The driver |
| Driving on the left | You adapt | Nothing to handle |
| Navigation and parking | Your job | Handled by the driver |
| Tolls and parking fees | Paid separately | Included in the quote |
| Pricing | Rental, fuel, insurance and so on, itemised | Per vehicle, regardless of headcount |
| A drink with dinner | The driver cannot drink | Everyone can relax |
| Pick-up and return | Visit the rental office | Not needed |
What to check before driving yourself
Driving in Japan is a legitimate and common choice, but a few things need sorting out first:
- Licence: Whether a licence from your home country is accepted differs by place of issue, so check with the authorities before you go. National Police Agency: https://www.npa.go.jp/; JAF: https://english.jaf.or.jp/.
- Road habits: Japan drives on the left. City streets are narrow with many one-way roads, and mountain roads are steep and winding.
- Parking: Parking is limited in big cities like Tokyo, and spaces near attractions must be found separately.
- Fatigue: After a long drive everyone in the car is tired, and the plan may not go as scheduled.
Rules and road conditions change, so rely on official notices and your rental company.
How day charter pricing works
For a Tokyo day charter, round trip from Tokyo, 10 hours, priced per vehicle, tolls and parking included:

|---|---|---|---|
| ECO | 5 | 4 bags | on request |
| Alphard | 7 | 6 bags | ¥45,000 |
| Hiace | 10 | 9 bags | ¥50,000 |
Time beyond 10 hours is ¥3,000 per 30 minutes. For longer trips such as Hakone, a day charter is on request (ECO), ¥60,000 (Alphard) or ¥70,000 (Hiace); see Haneda to Hakone.
Cost per person
| Travellers | Suggested vehicle | Tokyo day charter | Per person |

| 4 | ECO | on request | on request |
| 6 | Alphard | ¥45,000 | ¥7,500 |

Per-person figures are our own division, for reference only, and exclude late-night surcharge and add-ons. Count your luggage when choosing a vehicle; see Alphard and Hiace for the differences.
Who suits a private charter
- First-time visitors unused to driving on the left: leave the driving and navigation to the driver and enjoy the view.
- Families with elders or young children: easy boarding and luggage, and child seats can be provided.
- Groups of three or more: priced per vehicle, so the more people, the lower the cost per head.
- Anyone who wants a drink with dinner: nobody has to stay sober to drive.
- Spread-out itineraries with many changes: no timetables, and you set the pace.
When self-drive may suit better
If you know Japanese roads well, plan several days of long-distance driving, or spend most of the trip in the countryside, self-drive offers more flexibility. You can also book a charter for just one day and take trains for the rest.
