Atami & Izu Day Trip from Tokyo by Private Car: Prices, Hours and Who It Suits

· Updated

A 10-hour private car from Tokyo to Atami and East Izu costs on request (ECO), ¥70,000 (Alphard) or ¥80,000 (Hiace); South/West Izu on request / ¥70,000 / ¥80,000. Per vehicle, tax included, tolls and parking included.

Atami and the Izu Peninsula are seaside hot-spring areas close to Tokyo, but the region is larger than it looks: Atami and East Izu are nearer, while South and West Izu lie at the far end and along the west coast of the peninsula. For travellers who want a same-day round trip without repeated transfers, a Tokyo-based day charter is one option. This guide covers prices, time rules and planning. If you only need a ride from the airport to a hot-spring inn, see Haneda to Atami & East Izu.

Two price zones

Zone What it is Feel of a same-day round trip
Atami & East Izu Atami is the seaside hot-spring town nearest Tokyo; further south along the coast are Ito, Atagawa and other onsen areas Relatively relaxed, though you still need to budget for driving time
South & West Izu Shimoda's beaches, the sea caves and sunsets of Dogashima One-way drive alone takes hours; a same-day round trip is tight

Please tell us exactly where you want to go when booking, as each zone has its own rate.

Day charter prices

Tokyo round trip, in yen, per vehicle, tax included, tolls and parking included:

Atami & East Izu on request ¥70,000 ¥80,000
South & West Izu on request ¥70,000 ¥80,000

A Tokyo round-trip day charter covers 10 hours; overtime is ¥3,000 per 30 minutes. Driving there and back uses a large share of those hours, so avoid over-packing the day and tell us your planned start and return times when booking.

Add-ons and extra rules

  • Late night: services between 22:00 and 06:00 carry a flat ¥4,000 surcharge. For example, an ECO to Atami & East Izu starting or ending in that window totals on request + ¥4,000 = on request.
  • Extra stops: arranged on request, up to 3 per booking, such as a lunch or shopping stop along the way.
  • Child seats available: child safety seats and booster seats can be provided.
  • 24-hour service: early-morning starts and late finishes can be arranged.

Compared with trains

Getting to Atami usually means the Shinkansen or a JR line, then a taxi, bus or private railway to your inn; East Izu requires the Izukyu line; South and West Izu often add a bus leg, and West Izu has no railway. Timetables and fares change by season and ticket type, so we do not quote figures here. Please check the operators:

Who a day charter suits

  • Three or more travellers, families, or older relatives: per-person cost approaches train plus taxi, without hills or repeated transfers.
  • Anyone wanting several stops along the coast: you are not tied to timetables and decide how long to stay.
  • Lots of luggage or shopping: bags and strollers stay in the car all day.
  • One or two travellers on a tight budget: trains are cheaper; arrange transport only for the last leg.

Is the price per person or per vehicle?
Per vehicle, regardless of headcount, as long as you stay within the seats and luggage capacity: ECO seats 5 with 4 bags, Alphard seats 7 with 6 bags, Hiace seats 10 with 9 bags.
Can you provide child seats?
Yes. Child safety seats and booster seats are available, up to 3 child seats and 2 boosters per booking. Just state the number when booking.
