Hakone Day Trip from Tokyo by Private Car: Prices, Itinerary and Who It Suits

· Updated

A 10-hour private car from Tokyo to Hakone costs on request (ECO), ¥60,000 (Alphard) or ¥70,000 (Hiace). Per vehicle, tax included, tolls and parking included. Covers hours, per-person cost and how to plan Lake Ashi and Owakudani.

Hakone's sights are spread across the mountains, linked by trains, a mountain tram, ropeways and buses. Covering several places in one day often means waiting and changing. If you are staying in Tokyo and want a same-day round trip, a private day charter lets you ignore the timetables. This guide covers Tokyo-based day charters only; if you need the airport to your Hakone inn, see airport transfers to Hakone.

Hakone day charter prices

Tokyo round trip, in yen, per vehicle, tax included, tolls and parking included:

Destination ECO (5 seats) Alphard (7 seats) Hiace (10 seats)
Hakone on request ¥60,000 ¥70,000

A Tokyo round-trip day charter covers 10 hours; overtime is ¥3,000 per 30 minutes. Driving there and back uses part of those hours, so avoid over-packing the day.

Cost per person

Party Vehicle Fare Per person
2 ECO on request on request
4 ECO on request on request
6 Alphard ¥60,000 ¥10,000
10 Hiace ¥70,000 ¥7,000

These exclude late-night surcharges and add-ons; per-person figures are simple division for reference. Count your bags when choosing a vehicle; see Alphard and Hiace for details.

Planning the day

The advantage of a charter is that you set the order of stops and can adjust to the weather and crowds. Common ideas:

  • Around Lake Ashi: a lakeside walk and views, wider on a clear day.
  • Owakudani: a volcanic valley known for black eggs boiled in hot springs.
  • Onsen and lunch: a meal and a soak around Hakone-Yumoto or Gora.

Opening hours, and whether ropeways and sightseeing boats are running, change with weather and volcanic activity, so we give no specific times here; please check official notices before you go. Hakone Town Tourist Association: https://www.hakone.or.jp/en/.

Add-ons and extra rules

  • Late night: services between 22:00 and 06:00 carry a flat ¥4,000 surcharge. For example, an ECO starting or ending in that window totals on request + ¥4,000 = on request.
  • Extra stops: arranged on request, up to 3 per booking, such as a lunch or shopping stop.
  • Child seats available: child safety seats and booster seats can be provided.
  • 24-hour service: early-morning starts and late finishes can be arranged.

Compared with trains

Getting to Hakone usually means the Odakyu line to Hakone-Yumoto, then the mountain tram, ropeway or bus. Timetables and fares change by season and ticket type, so we do not quote figures here. Please check the operators:

Who a day charter suits

  • Three or more travellers, families, or older relatives: per-person cost is modest, with no repeated transfers or hill climbs.
  • Anyone wanting several stops in one day: you are not tied to timetables and decide how long to stay.
  • Lots of luggage or shopping: bags and strollers stay in the car all day.
  • One or two travellers on a tight budget: trains are cheaper; arrange a car only for tired legs or bad weather.
