Tokyo–Osaka Itinerary Transport: Shinkansen & Airports

Tokyo–Osaka itinerary transport: Shinkansen oversized luggage rules, sending bags ahead, and drive times and prices for the Tokyo pickup and Kansai drop-off.

Into Tokyo and out of Kansai is Japan's classic two-city route: a few days in Tokyo, the Shinkansen to Kyoto and Osaka, then home from Kansai Airport. On a Tokyo–Osaka itinerary, the airport transport at each end is easy to arrange. What catches people out is usually the big suitcase on the Shinkansen in the middle.

Tokyo to Osaka transport: Shinkansen luggage rules

On the Tokaido Shinkansen, JR Central requires bags whose three dimensions add up to more than 160 cm and up to 250 cm to travel with a reserved "seat with an oversized baggage area"; anything over 250 cm cannot be taken on board (JR Central). These seats are limited and can sell out in busy periods, so if two or three of you each have a large case, reserve them when you buy your tickets.

If you would rather not take big cases on the train at all, ask your Tokyo hotel's front desk to arrange luggage delivery to your Kyoto or Osaka hotel and travel with just a day bag. Check collection times and delivery dates with the hotel.

The Tokyo end: which airport

Airport Drive to central Tokyo Alphard Hiace
Haneda about 30–45 min ¥15,000 ¥17,000
Narita about 60–90 min ¥22,000 ¥27,000

Both are per vehicle, tax included, and the same for every Tokyo ward. If you plan to board the Shinkansen the next morning, a first night near Tokyo Station or Shinagawa makes that easiest (see Narita and Haneda to Shinagawa).

The Kansai end: Osaka or Kyoto makes a big difference

Kansai Airport sits on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, about 50–80 minutes from central Osaka and 90–120 minutes from Kyoto, depending on traffic. If your last night is in Kyoto, your airport transfer needs to leave considerably earlier than from Osaka. See Kyoto hotel to Kansai Airport: timing your drop-off and Osaka to Kansai Airport: timing your drop-off.

From Alphard Hiace
Central Osaka from ¥22,000 from ¥26,300
Central Kyoto from ¥32,200 from ¥37,500

Kansai routes are reference starting prices, with the final quote from our team. Many Kyoto inns are on narrow lanes, so give the Japanese address when booking your drop-off and our team will confirm the pickup point.

Submit both ends together

Give your arrival flight and Tokyo hotel for the pickup, and your departure flight and Kansai hotel for the drop-off; if your party or luggage differs between the two, choose a vehicle for each. Submit both at once and our team will confirm them together.

Book both ends on the booking page. Route details: Haneda to Tokyo, Narita to Tokyo, Kansai Airport to Osaka and Kansai Airport to Kyoto.
