Snow Monkey Park from Tokyo: Narita, Haneda and Winter Tips

· Updated

Getting to Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park from Tokyo's airports: which car park to use, the 15- or 30-minute walk, winter online tickets and the park rules.

For many travellers the snow monkeys are the first thing on the itinerary: land, then head from Tokyo straight to the Snow Monkey Park in Yamanouchi, Nagano. The hard part of that day isn't the drive. It's the last stretch: where the car can stop, how far you walk, and whether the monkeys show up at all. Everything below comes from the park's official English site.

The final leg is on foot, so plan your luggage

The park's access page describes two routes:

  • Jigokudani Parking: about a 15-minute walk to the park.
  • Free dedicated lot at Kanbayashi Onsen: about 2 km along the trail, roughly 30 minutes on foot.

The park adds that the trail is unpaved, with uneven ground and steps, and that wheelchairs and strollers cannot use it. Nobody should be dragging a suitcase up there straight from the airport. Tell us how many bags you have when booking, and consider dropping them at your accommodation first or leaving large items in the car; our staff will confirm the arrangement.

Winter: online tickets and footwear

The park says that from December to April, visitors holding online tickets are admitted first, so check ticketing before a winter trip. It recommends sneakers or hiking shoes in warmer months and rubber or snow boots in winter, and suggests bringing simple crampons. Travellers coming straight off a flight often wear thin shoes, so pack for this in advance.

The monkeys don't appear every day either. The park notes they may not visit on certain days, so look at its latest notices before you set out.

Snow Monkey Park from Tokyo: the road changes in winter

For drivers, the park recommends Shinshu Nakano IC and National Route 292 to Kanbayashi Onsen. The Shibu Onsen logging road is narrow and difficult, off-limits to large vehicles, and completely closed in winter. In other words, don't assume a map app's winter route will work. Tell us your date and group size when booking; our staff will confirm the plan and the parking point rather than assuming any particular entrance.

With a small group you could instead take a train to Yudanaka Station and a bus (the park lists about 15 minutes, then a walk). For a first-day arrival with luggage, a direct car is usually simpler. Check bus timetables with the operator.

Read the rules first

The park prohibits feeding, touching the monkeys, staring into their eyes, and bringing pets (guide and assistance animals included). Cameras and phones are fine, but not in the bath area, and selfie sticks and drones are banned. Rule-breakers are asked to leave.
