Tokyo's Christmas illumination in Marunouchi and Roppongi starts at dusk, just as traffic peaks. Drop bags first? Plus Christmas Eve and late-flight timing.
Many December visitors land in the early evening with big suitcases and want to see the Tokyo Christmas illumination that same night. Whether to go to the hotel first depends on where it is, when you land and when the crowds peak.
Tokyo Christmas illumination: Marunouchi and Roppongi do most of the work
- Roppongi: Mori Building's CHRISTMAS HILLS 2026 covers five "Hills" areas (Roppongi, Azabudai, Toranomon, Omotesando and Ark Hills) and runs from 5 November to 25 December.
- Marunouchi: See the Marunouchi website. Its page currently lists a winter event from 12 November to 25 December; check the event page for the actual lighting dates and hours.
Both are inside Tokyo's 23 wards area, where our fares are the same wherever your hotel is. If your hotel is near the lights, going straight there and walking over later is usually the least tiring plan. For transfer details, see Narita and Haneda to Roppongi and Narita and Haneda to Marunouchi and Otemachi.
Drop the bags, then go out light
- Go from the airport to the hotel and check in or leave your bags. Ask the hotel in advance whether they can hold luggage before check-in.
- Rest, then walk or take a short ride once it is dark.
- Return to the hotel after your photos.
If you do want a stop on the way, tell us when booking and our team will confirm it. Getting out with large bags is awkward, so dropping them first is still better.
Around Christmas Eve, allow extra time in the evening
Weekday evenings in December are already busy around Marunouchi and Roppongi. On Christmas Eve and weekends, crowds concentrate further and trips can take longer, depending on traffic that night. Do not schedule a tight dinner reservation right after landing.
Haneda is close to the city, which gives you more slack: Alphard to central Tokyo is ¥15,000 (see Haneda to Tokyo). Narita is a longer drive, with Alphard at ¥22,000, so leave more time for evening arrivals.
Heading back late
Taxis and trains are packed when the lights close. If you need a ride back, or you land on a late flight, note the 22:00–06:00 surcharge of ¥4,000. For example, Haneda to central Tokyo by Alphard comes to ¥19,000 at night. We operate 24 hours; tell us the pickup spot when booking and our team will confirm.
If your flight is late
Winter flights are sometimes delayed. Pickup includes 90 minutes of free waiting, so a late flight does not mean rebooking, but please give us your flight number. See how airport pickup works in Japan.
To fit the lights into your first night, book your airport transfer and give us your hotel address and landing time. All quotes are confirmed by our staff.
FAQ
- Can I go straight from the airport to the Tokyo Christmas illumination with luggage?

- Will the drive take longer if I land on Christmas Eve?
- Evening traffic around Marunouchi and Roppongi can be heavier than usual, depending on conditions that night. Give us your hotel location when you book and our team will confirm the drop-off point and timing.
- Can I book a car to get back to the hotel after the lights?
- We operate 24 hours, with a late-night surcharge between 22:00 and 06:00. If you need a pickup in an illumination area, tell us the location when booking and our team will confirm the arrangement.
