Gion Matsuri transport: Yoiyama crowds and procession road controls hit Shijo and Kawaramachi. 2026 dates, the procession route, and how to fix a drop-off point.
Gion Matsuri's main events cluster around Shijo, Kawaramachi and Oike streets, which is also where many visitors choose to stay, so Gion Matsuri transport needs planning. The drive from Kansai Airport normally takes about 90–120 minutes depending on traffic (see our Kansai Airport to Kyoto transport guide for ordinary days), but during Yoiyama or procession days it is the last stretch into central Kyoto that is hardest to predict.
Know which days matter
The festival has an early and a latter half, each with three Yoiyama evenings and one Yamaboko Junko procession day. In 2026 (see the Kyoto City Tourism Association's guide):
- Early festival: Yoiyama 14–16 July; procession 17 July from 9:00.
- Latter festival: Yoiyama 21–23 July; procession 24 July from 9:30.
Yoiyama is the street festival after dusk, with heavy foot traffic; the procession is a morning event. If your flight lands on one of these days, tell us where you are staying when you book rather than after you clear immigration.
Gion Matsuri transport: how close is your hotel to the route?
The early procession follows Shijo, Kawaramachi and Oike; the latter follows Oike, Kawaramachi and Shijo. If your hotel is around Shijo-Kawaramachi or Oike, vehicle access and stopping will be affected on procession mornings (roughly 9:00 to midday), so do not plan a tight arrival. Hotels near Kyoto Station or in Higashiyama overlap less with the route (still choosing a base? see staying in Kyoto or Osaka), though roads into the centre can still be slow. For exact controls and times, rely on the official digital maps and notices.
Agree the drop-off point in advance
Hotels near Shijo-Kawaramachi often sit in narrow lanes, and during the festival it is harder still to reach the door. When booking, please include:
- the hotel's name (Japanese if possible) and address;
- your arrival date and flight;
- whether you would prefer to be dropped on a main road outside the controlled area and walk the rest.
Our staff confirm the actual drop-off arrangement; we do not promise a stop at the hotel entrance before it is confirmed. With large suitcases, agreeing on a nearby point where a car can stop beats dragging luggage through Yoiyama crowds.
Use the official crowd forecast
Kyoto publishes a crowd forecast site by area and time. Check it during the festival to decide whether to join Yoiyama on arrival night or wait until the next day.
