Kamakura Hydrangea Season: Meigetsuin and Hase-dera by Car

Landing at Haneda in June and want to see Kamakura's hydrangeas? Plan Meigetsuin and Hase-dera around their official hours, and what to do about parking.

If you land at Haneda in June and want to see Kamakura's hydrangeas the same day, you can, as long as you decide which temple comes first. Meigetsuin and Hase-dera have different opening hours, sit in different parts of town and handle parking differently. This guide sequences them from the official hours and explains how a private car fits into hydrangea season.

Two temples, two closing times

Visit Kanagawa describes Meigetsuin as the "hydrangea temple", with about 2,500 blue hydrangeas blooming around June. In June it is open 8:30–17:00 (9:00–16:00 in other months), and the nearest station is Kita-Kamakura on the JR Yokosuka Line (Visit Kanagawa: Meigetsuin).

Hase-dera lists April–June hours of 8:00–17:30, last entry 17:00 (Hase-dera visitor information).

Meigetsuin closes at 17:00 and Hase-dera at 17:30 (last entry 17:00). Since Meigetsuin also opens at 8:30 in June, we suggest Meigetsuin first, Hase-dera second, which leaves you a buffer if you run late.

A Haneda arrival-day schedule

Assuming an early-morning landing and clearing the airport by late morning:

  1. Car from Haneda to Kita-Kamakura. Allow roughly 60–90 minutes depending on traffic; June weekends around Kamakura can be slow, so leave slack.
  2. After Meigetsuin, head toward the Hase area; customer service will confirm the drop-off point.
  3. Reach Hase-dera before last entry at 17:00.
  4. Overnight in Kamakura, or continue to Yokohama or central Tokyo (ask us to quote that leg).

If your flight lands in the afternoon, plan Hase-dera only and save Meigetsuin for another morning rather than rushing both.

Luggage and parking

Hase-dera states it does not accept parking reservations, so whether a car can stop near the temple is only known on the day, and hydrangea season is the worst time to assume. When you book, tell us which temple and roughly what time; drop-off position and any extra stop are confirmed by customer service. With suitcases, go to your hotel first and visit the temples afterwards.

Price and splitting the cost

Haneda to Kamakura · Enoshima is ¥45,000 per Alphard or ¥50,000 per Hiace; from Narita an Alphard is ¥60,000. All prices are per vehicle, tax included, with tolls and parking included. Six people in an Alphard from Haneda pay about ¥7,500 each. Narita is a much longer drive to Kamakura, so Haneda is the better choice on a flower-viewing day.
