Lake Toya Day Trip: Cruise, Viewpoints and Lakeside Walks

Planning a Lake Toya day trip from New Chitose Airport? Use the local tourism association's courses to choose between the cruise, Nishiyama, Silo Observatory and a lakeside stroll.

If you land at New Chitose with one day for a Lake Toya day trip, the real problem is spread: the lake is about 43 km around, and sights are divided among five districts. The practical answer is not to circle the lake. Pick one district as the core, then finish with a half-hour lakeside walk or a cruise.

Lake Toya day trip: base yourself in the onsen town

The Toyako Onsen Tourism Association splits the lake into the hot spring area, highland area, Tsukiura, Toya and Abuta, and starts its model courses from the Donan Bus Terminal. The onsen town is the walkable part; everything else needs a vehicle. So choose the onsen town as your base and add one direction outward.

The 90-minute courses: Nishiyama and the Silo Observatory, or volcano and history

The 90-minute course page lists two:

  • Nishiyama and Silo Observatory: the Kompira Crater disaster remains trail (about 25 minutes, open late April to end of October, with buildings damaged in the 2000 Usu eruption left in place; the paved path takes about 30 minutes), then the Silo Observatory (about 20 minutes, views of Lake Toya, Mt. Usu and Showa-Shinzan; a café in summer and snowmobiles in winter).
  • Culture and history: the Lake Toya Usu Volcano Science Museum (about 25 minutes, covering the 2000 eruption and how the hot springs formed; the page suggests visiting before walking the town), then the Irie and Takasago Shell Mound Museum (about 30 minutes, with artifacts tied to the Jomon Sites of Hokkaido and Northern Tohoku).

Both courses move by vehicle, so walkers should settle transport first.

The 30-minute courses and the cruise: how to end the day

The 30-minute course page has a lakeside stroll: about 7 minutes on foot from the bus terminal to a takeout coffee stand, then the TOYA DOORS installation in front of the Doryu-no-Yu foot bath (set up April 28 to October 31), then along the shore past the sculpture park and hand and foot baths. Fireworks can be seen from there at night. A sweets route covers the Wakasaimo flagship shop and a pâtisserie attached to The Lakeview TOYA.

For the boat, the leisure page says the Nakajima route runs April 28 to October 31, the gate closes at 14:30 (14:00 in October), and the longest route takes about 3 hours. In other words, the cruise cannot be your last stop of the day.

Seasons change the plan

The crater trail and Nakajima route are both late-April-to-October only. Winter brings the illumination tunnel and the snow play square (late December to March 9, weather permitting). The association also posted a temporary closure notice for the Doryu-no-Yu foot bath in October 2026, so check before you go.

New Chitose Airport to Lake Toya

The association's access page gives about 109 km by car, or about 1 hour 30 minutes by limited express from Minami-Chitose to Toya Station, then a Donan Bus or taxi (about 20 minutes, depending on traffic) to the onsen town. The trade-off with the train is transfers: you change at Minami-Chitose, then again at Toya, with luggage both times.

If you land around midday and want the cruise or viewpoint the same afternoon, a private transfer avoids those changes. Lake Toya is not on our public price list, so please ask our staff for a quote; tell us your luggage count and first stop when booking and we will confirm the arrangement. For late arrivals, see late-night arrival at New Chitose.

Adding Noboribetsu or Otaru

Toya and Noboribetsu both lie southwest of the airport; see New Chitose to Toya, Noboribetsu and Otaru for order and drive times, or New Chitose to Sapporo if you are heading to the city first. When your plan is set, book here.
