Tokyo to Kinugawa Onsen from Narita or Haneda: Tobu limited express tickets, the 2-hour ride from Asakusa, local buses, and a private car to your ryokan.
Most people going from Tokyo to Kinugawa Onsen straight off a flight are heading for one night in a hot-spring ryokan, with suitcases still full. The real question is not "how do I get to Kinugawa" but how many times your luggage has to be lifted between the airport and the ryokan.
Tokyo to Kinugawa Onsen by train: a Tobu limited express
According to Tobu Railway, the SPACIA limited express takes about 2 hours from Asakusa to Kinugawa Onsen. That clock starts at Asakusa, so from Narita or Haneda you add the ride into Tokyo and over to Asakusa or Kita-Senju.
Two rules from Tobu's limited express ticket guide:
- You need a basic fare ticket plus a limited express ticket, and trains running through to JR lines have separate purchase rules.
- Limited express tickets can be bought close to departure, but check seat availability yourself for busy days; fares are as published by Tobu.
With two large suitcases, that means lifting them at the airport, at the Tokyo transfer platform and onto the limited express. Arriving on a weekend leaves less margin on both seats and platforms.
Once you reach Kinugawa Onsen Station
Tobu's course page shows a Nikko Kotsu bus from Kinugawa Onsen to Tobu World Square in about 5 minutes and to Edo Wonderland Nikko Edomura in about 15 minutes. So the sights here are linked to the station by bus.
How far your ryokan is from the station, and whether it runs a shuttle, differs by property and is not covered on the official page; check with the ryokan. With a private car, tell us the ryokan's name at booking and our staff will confirm the arrangement, so luggage does not need another change at the station. For the same direction from the airport, see Narita and Haneda transfers to Karuizawa and Nikko.
Stopping at Edo Wonderland or Tobu World Square on the way
Both attractions are listed on the same official page as being near Kinugawa Onsen. If you want to visit before check-in, decide where the bags go first. Whether luggage can stay in the car and where it can stop should be told at booking and confirmed by our staff; do not assume it is guaranteed. To build a full day of sights instead, see a Tokyo day charter to Karuizawa and Nikko.
Plan the way back before you go
About 2 hours is one-way from Asakusa only, so a same-day round trip is tight. A smoother plan is to go straight to the ryokan and decide the next morning whether to head to the airport or back to Tokyo. For a car on the return, check your flight time and check-out time first.
