Noboribetsu Hell Valley Half Day from New Chitose Airport

How to plan a half day at Noboribetsu's Hell Valley (Jigokudani) after landing at New Chitose: Oyunuma, the bear park ropeway, train vs bus, and winter road notes.

Landing at New Chitose around midday and wanting to see Noboribetsu's Hell Valley (Jigokudani) before checking in to a hot spring inn comes down to two decisions: what to do with your luggage, and whether to squeeze in the bear park or Lake Kuttara. Our advice: keep the half day for Jigokudani plus Oyunuma, and leave the rest for the next morning.

What the tourist association suggests for a half day

The Noboribetsu Onsen Tourism Association publishes model courses sorted by time. Three are relevant:

  • Deluxe Jigokudani course (by car): the valley and the nature within the national park, listed as a 120-minute course.
  • Jigokudani and Lake Kuttara course (by car, 60 minutes): Jigokudani, Lake Oyunuma and Lake Kuttara in one loop. It's a quick look rather than a slow walk.
  • Bear Park and Lake Kuttara Observatory course (walk plus ropeway): ropeway from Noboribetsu Bear Park up to the observatory, on the 120-minute course page.

The association doesn't give per-spot visiting times, so judge walking time on site. For a half day, treat "Hell Valley plus Oyunuma" as the ceiling.

Hell Valley and Oyunuma: why they pair well

Both are volcanic landscapes of the Noboribetsu hot spring area. The association's 60-minute course links them by car rather than on foot from the onsen street. If you don't have a car, decide up front whether you'll walk just the valley or have a driver take you on to Oyunuma. Check the association and on-site notices for trail openings.

The bear park ropeway: worth adding?

The Bear Park and observatory course suits families and animal lovers, but ropeway hours, winter suspensions and road conditions to Lake Kuttara all depend on the day. The association notes that Route 350 (Kuttara Park line) closes seasonally in winter, which affects Lake Kuttara. From November to April, treat Kuttara as a bonus, not a fixture.

New Chitose to Noboribetsu Onsen: train or bus

The association's access page lists two ways from the airport:

  • Train: Airport rapid to Minami-Chitose, then the Limited Express Hokuto or Suzuran to Noboribetsu Station. The page gives no travel time, and the station is still a separate leg from the onsen town, so with bags the number of transfers is the real cost.
  • Express bus: two airport routes, both reservation only. One takes about 1 hour; the other about 1 hour 15 minutes with a transfer at Shiomizaka to a bus bound for the onsen.

The onsen town is about 6 km from the Noboribetsu Higashi interchange and about 8 km from JR Noboribetsu Station (same page), so it isn't walkable from the station. Check the official site for schedules, phone reservations and fares.

Luggage and timing: where a private car helps

If your flight lands around noon and you want the valley before the inn, luggage is the problem: Hell Valley is a walking visit and you can't wheel two suitcases along the boardwalk. You can book a private car from New Chitose; tell us the luggage count and your first stop when booking and our team will confirm the arrangement. Noboribetsu isn't on our public price list, so please contact us for a quote.

If you land in the evening, skip the valley: boardwalks can be icy in winter and visibility drops after dark. For late arrivals, see New Chitose late-night arrival.

Combining with Lake Toya or Otaru

Noboribetsu and Lake Toya are southwest of the airport while Otaru is on the far side of Sapporo; see New Chitose to Lake Toya, Noboribetsu and Otaru for the order, or New Chitose to Sapporo if you're heading to the city first. More options are on our New Chitose routes; when your dates are set, use the booking page.

FAQ

Is a half day enough for Noboribetsu Hell Valley?
Yes for the valley itself. The Noboribetsu Onsen tourist association lists a 'Deluxe Jigokudani' drive covering the valley and the national park scenery, plus a 60-minute drive linking Jigokudani, Oyunuma and Lake Kuttara. Add the bear park ropeway only if you have most of the day.
How do I get from New Chitose Airport to Noboribetsu Onsen?
The association lists two options: the Airport rapid train to Minami-Chitose, then the Limited Express Hokuto or Suzuran to Noboribetsu Station (you still need another leg to the hot spring town), or an airport express bus that requires a reservation, about 1 hour or 1 hour 15 minutes (the latter transfers at Shiomizaka). Check the official site for current schedules.
What should I know about visiting Hell Valley in winter?
The association advises checking tires, clothing and road conditions from November to April, and notes a seasonal closure of Route 350 (Kuttara Park line) that affects Lake Kuttara. Boardwalks can ice over, so non-slip shoes matter.
Can I go to Hell Valley straight from the airport with big suitcases?
The valley is a walking visit, so suitcases are a hassle. Leave them at your hot spring hotel first, or book a private car and tell us the luggage count and your first stop when booking; our team will confirm the arrangement.
