The Sapporo Snow Festival is Hokkaido's busiest winter week. The snow and ice sculptures are in the city centre, and so are most of the hotels, which makes the streets around the sites both the most crowded and the most likely to affect your transfer. Where the three festival sites are
According to the official Sapporo Snow Festival website, the festival has three sites:
- Odori site: along Odori Park, home of the large snow sculptures and the busiest site.
- Susukino site: in the Susukino area, mainly ice sculptures, and busy in the evening too.
- Tsudome site: at the Sapporo Community Dome in Higashi Ward, mainly snow play for families, further from the centre.
Dates and content each year follow the official announcements. Sapporo's hotels are concentrated around Sapporo Station, Odori and Susukino, so the first two sites sit right beside where most visitors stay.
Snow Festival transport in Odori and Susukino: the drop-off may move
During the festival, Odori and Susukino are full of pedestrians, traffic is slow, and some roads may be restricted. Give the full hotel name and Japanese address when booking; our team will confirm the drop-off point based on conditions on the day, which may mean stopping at a nearby spot where the car can pull in if your hotel entrance faces a festival site.
Pavements are often icy in winter, so the closer the drop-off is to the hotel, the easier it is with luggage.
New Chitose in February: snow, flights and roads
Heavy snow in Hokkaido can delay or cancel flights at New Chitose and affect trains into the city; check the New Chitose Airport website and JR Hokkaido for the latest.
- If your flight is delayed, send our team the new arrival time; airport pickups include 90 minutes of free waiting and we follow your arrival by flight number.
- New Chitose to central Sapporo usually takes about 60–90 minutes; in snow, slippery roads and slower traffic make it longer (see New Chitose to Sapporo: train, bus or private car).
- If a delay means landing after 22:00, the night-time surcharge of ¥4,000 applies.

Skiing after the festival
Many visitors head to Niseko or Furano to ski after the festival.
