Tokyo to Kamikochi by Car: Sawando Transfer Explained

Private cars can't enter Kamikochi. Cars stop at Sawando, then a 30-minute bus or taxi. Season dates, last taxi time and plans from Haneda or Narita.

The detail that surprises most people planning Tokyo to Kamikochi: you can't drive in. The Kamikochi official site says private cars, rental cars and motorcycles cannot pass the Kama Tunnel year-round, so every vehicle stops at Sawando (Matsumoto side) or Akandana in Hirayu (Takayama side) and visitors continue by shuttle bus or taxi. What you really need to plan from Haneda or Narita is how long the drive to Sawando takes and how much daylight is left after you change vehicles.

Where a private car can take you: Sawando, then transfer

From the Matsumoto side, the official site describes about 1 hour by car from Matsumoto IC to the Sawando parking area, then roughly 30 minutes by shuttle bus or taxi into Kamikochi. Sawando has about 2,000 parking spaces; the municipal lots are open around the clock and private lots open around 5:00. Taxis leave from stands in each lot, and the last boarding time is 18:00.

How our vehicles are classified for access, and whether a drop-off anywhere other than Sawando is possible, is not something we promise here. Tell us your date, party size and luggage count when booking and our team will confirm the arrangement.

Working out your arrival day

The official site doesn't give a driving time from Tokyo. As a general estimate, Haneda or Narita to Sawando takes roughly 4.5 to 6 hours depending on traffic and holiday congestion. Land at 9:00 and you reach Sawando after midday, then spend about 30 minutes changing over, so you enter the valley in the early afternoon, close to the last taxi time and the 19:00 closing. A same-day round trip is a stretch.

Two plans hold up better:

  • Sleep the first night in Matsumoto or near Sawando, leave luggage at the hotel, and go into Kamikochi from 5:00 with a day bag.
  • Stay at a hotel inside Kamikochi. The car takes you to Sawando and you transfer from there. Ask the hotel how luggage reaches it.

Season and crowds: October needs the most margin

The official site lists the 2025 season as 17 April to 15 November, 5:00 to 19:00, extended to 20:00 in July and August. It also warns that summer-holiday weekends, the Obon period and the October foliage season are very crowded, so allow extra time. Autumn visitors face both the crowds and the mid-November closing; confirm that year's dates on the official site.

Train and bus versus a private car

The official public-transport route is the Matsumoto Electric Railway Kamikochi Line to Shin-Shimashima, then a local bus or taxi, about 1 hour 30 minutes in total. There are also direct buses from Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka that must be reserved in advance. For a solo traveller with a small bag, those work well. For two or more people with suitcases, or if you want Matsumoto city or an onsen inn on the same day, a car from the airport to Sawando saves the transfers and carrying in central Tokyo. Timetables and fares are on the Kamikochi official access page and in Alpico Transportation notices.

Pricing and booking

Kamikochi and Matsumoto are not on the fixed fare table, so please ask for a quote. The nearest fixed route is Haneda to Hakuba, Nagano and Yuzawa, which gives a rough direction. For the same region, see how to reach the Jigokudani snow monkeys and a Tokyo to Nagano day by private charter. Once your dates are set, submit your flight, party size and luggage on the booking page.

FAQ

Can I drive or rent a car into Kamikochi from Tokyo?
No. The Kamikochi official site states that private cars, rental cars and motorcycles cannot pass the Kama Tunnel at any time of year. You park at a designated lot and continue by shuttle bus or taxi. From the Matsumoto side the lot is Sawando; from the Takayama side it is Akandana in Hirayu.
When is Kamikochi open?
The official site lists the 2025 season as 17 April to 15 November, 5:00 to 19:00 daily, extended to 20:00 in July and August. Dates are announced each year, so check the official site before you go.
How long is the ride from Sawando to Kamikochi, and when is the last taxi?
The official site gives about 30 minutes by shuttle bus or taxi. The last boarding time at the taxi stands in the Sawando parking lots is 18:00. Check Alpico Transportation for the last shuttle bus.
Can I do Kamikochi as a same-day trip on my arrival day?
We don't recommend it. Getting from Haneda or Narita to Sawando already takes much of the day, and the transfer plus walking inside the valley pushes you against the last taxi time. Most travellers stay the first night in Matsumoto or near Sawando and enter Kamikochi early the next morning.
How much is a private transfer from Tokyo to Kamikochi?
Kamikochi and Matsumoto are not on the fixed fare table. Please contact our team for a quote.
