Narita's flat-fare taxis need no booking but tolls are extra; a private transfer fixes the vehicle and a toll-inclusive fare in advance. Compare fares, luggage and child seats.
Step out of arrivals at Narita or Haneda and the obvious option is the taxi rank. Both airports run fixed-fare taxis into Tokyo — the Narita taxi flat fare, for example, is set by the zone your destination falls in (explained on Tokyo's official tourism site). So what is the real difference between booking a car in advance and picking up a taxi when you land?
1. Booking a Narita flat-fare taxi: turn up and go, or fixed in advance
Narita Airport's official site says fixed-fare taxis need no advance reservation — you confirm with the driver at the rank. That is the taxi's great advantage: if your flight time is uncertain or your plans may change, you can decide on arrival.
A private transfer fixes the vehicle, pickup time and destination before you fly, and you meet as arranged. If your flight is late, airport pickups include 90 minutes of free waiting.
2. What the fare includes
| Narita fixed-fare taxi (per official site) | Private transfer | |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing | Fixed fare by destination zone | Per vehicle, by route and vehicle type |
| Expressway tolls | Paid on top | Included |
| Parking | — | Included |
| Late night | Surcharge applies | ¥4,000 between 22:00 and 06:00 |
For taxi fares and zones, check the airports and operators. For private transfers, one fare covers anywhere in Tokyo: from Haneda, Alphard ¥15,000 or Hiace ¥17,000; from Narita, Alphard ¥22,000 or Hiace ¥27,000 (per vehicle, tax included). For what a transfer quote covers, see tolls and parking included in Japan airport transfer prices; for how the one-fare-for-Tokyo rule works, see Tokyo airport transfer flat rates explained.
3. Vehicle and luggage: when you find out whether it fits
At the taxi rank you see the vehicle when you get there, and whether a lot of luggage fits is decided on the spot.
With a private transfer you choose the vehicle in advance to suit your group and bags: the Alphard seats 7 with room for 6 bags, and the Hiace seats 10 with room for 9. If you have a stroller, golf bags or other bulky items, list them when booking and our team will confirm they fit.
4. Travelling with children: arranging seats in advance
Child seats and booster seats are available with a private transfer — just include the number and ages of the children when booking. For families with small children who need a seat, arranging it ahead takes one worry away.
Which to choose
- One or two people, light bags, plans still open: the taxi rank is quick and easy.
- A family or group with lots of luggage or small children: a private transfer fixes the vehicle, seats and fare in advance.
- You want to know the total, tolls included, before you fly: a private transfer.

FAQ
