Tokyo to Kusatsu Onsen: Train, Direct Bus or Private Car

· Updated

There is no direct train from Tokyo to Kusatsu Onsen. Compare the express-plus-bus, highway bus and a private car from Narita or Haneda for transfers, luggage and winter roads.

If you land at Narita or Haneda and want to be soaking beside the Yubatake the next day, the hard part of getting from Tokyo to Kusatsu Onsen is not Kusatsu itself. It is that no railway runs from the airport all the way to the town, so the real question is where you want to do your transfers with your bags.

The terrain: Kusatsu sits on a plateau, and the rails stop at the foot of it

According to the Kusatsu Onsen official site, the nearest railway station is JR Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi and the nearest Shinkansen station is Karuizawa; from either you take a bus to Kusatsu Bus Terminal. The site also notes that the town lies on a plateau at about 1,200 m, where winter snowfall is expected and vehicles need snow measures.

Two practical consequences:

  • Any rail route includes a train-to-bus change, so luggage is handled at the platform and again at the bus stop.
  • In winter, road conditions can shape the day. The site has a road information page and notices about Route 292, worth checking before you leave.

Tokyo to Kusatsu Onsen: three ways, each with a sticking point

Train plus bus. JR East describes the limited express Kusatsu-Shima linking Ueno (some services Tokyo) with Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi, followed by a bus uphill. From the airport you first travel into central Tokyo to board. Timetable, seats and fares are on the JR East site.

Via Karuizawa. Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Karuizawa, then a bus to Kusatsu. This suits you if Karuizawa is already on the itinerary, but it is still two changes. For getting from the airports to Karuizawa, see Narita and Haneda to Karuizawa and Nikko and the Narita to Karuizawa route.

Direct highway bus. The official site lists the Joshu Yumeguri-go (from Tokyo and Shinjuku) and a Tokyu bus from Shibuya. It saves the change at the foot of the mountain, but you board in the city, so you must get there from the airport first, and a flight that lands off-schedule means waiting for the next departure.

What a private car actually saves

A private car replaces airport, city, express train and bus with one leg to your ryokan, which matters most for two or more travellers with big suitcases and gifts. Expect a long drive, roughly 3.5 to 5 hours depending on traffic and season, and more in winter or on holiday weekends.

Streets in the onsen centre are narrow, and how close a car can stop to your ryokan varies. Tell us the ryokan name when booking and our team will confirm the arrangement; please do not assume door-to-door access.

One night or a day trip

The trip is half a day each way, so most people check in on arrival, soak and walk the Yubatake the next morning, then head back. For an international departure, agree checkout and airport times in advance and leave a buffer for the mountain road; for timing tips, see Karuizawa and Nikko to Narita or Haneda.
