Ghibli Museum from Haneda or Narita: Timed Tickets and Luggage

· Updated

Getting to the Ghibli Museum from Haneda? Entry is by timed advance ticket only, so a late flight can cost your slot. When to visit, where to leave bags, and transfers to Mitaka.

The one thing to know about the Ghibli Museum, Mitaka is that it does not sell tickets at the door: all entry is by tickets bought in advance for a set date and entry time. For someone just off a plane, that means any delay — flight, immigration or traffic — could make you miss the slot you paid for. So whether you are heading to the Ghibli Museum from Haneda or Narita, plan the airport-to-Mitaka leg backwards from your museum ticket.

Don't schedule the museum on arrival day

After an international flight, immigration and baggage reclaim depend on the crowds, and the flight itself may be late. Booking museum entry for the day you land puts the whole day at the mercy of an on-time arrival.

A safer plan:

  1. Arrival day: go straight from the airport to your accommodation in Mitaka or Kichijoji, drop your bags and rest.
  2. The next day or later: head to the museum with light bags at your booked time.

If arrival day is your only option, pick a late entry slot and allow for a delayed flight. For how drivers wait when flights run late, see how airport pickup works in Japan.

Ghibli Museum from Haneda: leave your luggage at your accommodation

The museum sits on the west side of Inokashira Park, about a 15-minute walk from the south exit of JR Mitaka Station, with a community bus also running from the station (per the official site). That is not a walk to do with large suitcases, and you should check with the museum in advance whether large bags can be stored. Dropping luggage at your accommodation first is by far the easiest option.

A private car goes from the airport straight to your door. A family with big suitcases fits in an Alphard (7 seats, 6 bags); two families together in a Hiace (10 seats, 9 bags). Child seats are available — include the number and ages of the children when you book (see child seat rules in Japan).

Staying in Mitaka or Kichijoji

Visitors who want to be near the museum usually stay around Mitaka or Kichijoji stations, both on the JR Chuo Line. Kichijoji has more shops and restaurants; the Mitaka side is quieter. Some stays are apartments in residential streets, so give the Japanese address, building name and room number when booking, and our team will confirm the drop-off point with the driver. For more on this area, see Narita and Haneda to Nakano and Kichijoji.

Price and drive time

Mitaka and Musashino (Kichijoji) are inside Tokyo Metropolis and are charged at the Tokyo rate: from Haneda, Alphard ¥15,000 or Hiace ¥17,000; from Narita, Alphard ¥22,000 or Hiace ¥27,000 (per vehicle, tax included). The area is further out than Shinjuku or Ginza, so please ask our team for the drive time. See Haneda to Tokyo and Narita to Tokyo.

Fix your museum date first, then send your flight and accommodation details on the booking page.

FAQ

Can I buy Ghibli Museum tickets at the door?
No. The museum's official site says all admission is by advance reservation, with tickets specifying the date and entry time. Check the official site for how and when tickets go on sale.
Can I go to the Ghibli Museum straight from Haneda on the day I land?
We would not schedule your entry soon after landing. Immigration, baggage reclaim and the drive can all take longer than expected. The safer plan is to drop your bags at your accommodation first and visit the museum the next day or later.
Is Mitaka priced the same as central Tokyo?
Mitaka is inside Tokyo Metropolis and is charged at the Tokyo rate, for example ¥15,000 from Haneda by Alphard (per vehicle, tax included). It is further out than the city centre, so drive time and the final quote are confirmed by our live support team.
