Shibuya Halloween road closures and crowds can stop cars short of your hotel on 31 October. Which hours to avoid, how to fix a drop-off point, and the next-day airport run.
On the weekends around Halloween — and above all on the night of 31 October — the area around Shibuya Station is nothing like a normal evening. Shibuya City has asked people every year not to come to Shibuya for Halloween, and since October 2024 a ward ordinance has banned drinking in public spaces around the station from 18:00 to 05:00 all year round. When crowds build, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police may also restrict pedestrian and vehicle traffic, which is what people mean by Shibuya Halloween road closures.
If your hotel is near Shibuya Station, your airport transfer on these days needs a little more thought (for a normal day, see our Narita to Shibuya transport guide).
Shibuya at Halloween: when road impact is greatest
- From early evening to late night on 31 October. Crowds peak, traffic near the station crawls, and some roads may be restricted.
- Weekend evenings before Halloween. Busy too, though usually less so than the night itself.
- Daytime. Much like any other day.
The rule of thumb: the closer to the night of 31 October, and the closer to the station, the harder it is to predict.
Arrival day: check in before evening if you can
If you can choose your flight, land during the day and check in before evening; decide later whether to head out. If you can only arrive at night:
- Give the hotel name, address and entrance when booking, and our team will confirm the drop-off point for that night.
- If the car cannot get close, you will be dropped at the nearest place it can stop and walk the rest with your bags — be ready for that with heavy luggage.
- Consider staying a little further from Shibuya Station for those nights, for example around Yoyogi or Ebisu, where the drop-off is far easier (see Haneda to Ebisu).
The next morning: work back from your flight
After a late night out, the morning of 1 November can easily feel rushed. Work back from your flight time and allow fully for the drive, check-in and security: about 30–45 minutes to Haneda and 60–90 minutes to Narita, depending on traffic. Check your airline's check-in deadline on its website, and see our Tokyo hotel to airport transfer guide for working back the timing.
Price
Prices do not change around Halloween. Shibuya is inside Tokyo: from Haneda, Alphard ¥15,000 or Hiace ¥17,000; from Narita, Alphard ¥22,000 or Hiace ¥27,000 (per vehicle, tax included). Trips between 22:00 and 06:00 carry a ¥4,000 surcharge. See Haneda to Tokyo and Narita to Tokyo.
Tell us your arrival time and where your hotel is, and the drop-off can be arranged in advance. Send your details on the booking page.
