Getting from Narita or Haneda to Karuizawa in winter is less about the distance than about the last stretch of road, when it is icy. Karuizawa sits at roughly 1,000 metres and is often below freezing in winter. This guide covers the real limits of winter driving and where a private transfer helps.

Karuizawa in Winter: The Last Few Kilometres Are the Hard Part

Hoshino Resorts' Karuizawa ski guide says snowfall is modest, but many roads from the nearest interchange to the ski areas freeze, studless tyres are essential for driving, and locals fit them from mid-November to early April.

So the expressway is rarely the problem; hills and back roads are. Dragging suitcases and ski bags across icy ground to change trains and then shuttles is no fun. If your hotel is beside a ski area or in a villa district, a transfer that goes straight to the door removes that final leg.

Winter Tyre Checks on Japanese Expressways

NEXCO East's winter road guidance states that when snow falls around Tokyo, tyres are checked at entrances and only vehicles with winter tyres or chains can pass. In severe snowfall, such as a heavy-snow special warning, chain restrictions on some sections require chains even on winter tyres. That notice dates from 2018, so check NEXCO East's current announcements and live road conditions.

For you, that means a snowy forecast can push arrival later than usual. Leave a wide gap between landing and check-in, and avoid booking ski lessons or dinner tightly around it.

Three Ski Areas, Very Different Distances from the Station

• Karuizawa Prince Hotel Ski Area: about a 10-minute walk from JR Karuizawa Station, easiest if you stay by the station.
• Saku Ski Garden Parada: about 12 minutes by car from JR Sakudaira Station.
• Takamine Mountain Park (formerly Asama 2000 Park): about 45 minutes by car from JR Sakudaira Station, higher up, with powder snow noted in the guide.

If your ski area is not next to Karuizawa Station, "Karuizawa" is not a precise enough drop-off. Give the hotel or ski area name when you book so the car goes to the right place.

Private Transfer from Narita or Haneda

Karuizawa is outside Tokyo and priced separately: ¥60,000 from Haneda and ¥80,000 from Narita, per vehicle, tax included, with tolls and parking covered. Journey time depends on traffic and weather, so be conservative in winter.
