Kawazu cherry blossom festival access: early-February blooms on the far Izu coast. 2026 dates, train and road times, and how to plan arrival day.
The appeal of Kawazu's cherry trees is timing: you can see blossoms in February, well before the usual April crowds. The catch is festival access. Kawazu is on the southeast side of the Izu Peninsula, so the trip from the airport is long, and the bloom dictates when you should arrive.
Work backwards from the bloom, not from the cheapest flight
According to the Kawazu Town Tourism Association, the bloom usually runs from early February to early March, with peak bloom lasting roughly a week to ten days. About 850 cherry trees line the Kawazu River. The festival's official site lists the 2026 festival dates as February 7 to March 8.
Festival dates are not peak-bloom dates. Winter temperatures shift the bloom each year, so the safer approach is to watch the official bloom updates, aim to land within a few days of full bloom, and keep your plans flexible.
Kawazu cherry blossom festival access: how the two options compare
By train. Per the tourism association's access page, the Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Atami takes about 1 hour, then a local Ito Line train toward Izukyu-Shimoda takes about 1 hour 30 minutes to Kawazu. From Narita or Haneda you must first reach Tokyo Station, so with suitcases you are handling luggage at the airport, in Tokyo and again at Atami, on platforms that get crowded on bloom weekends.
By car. The same page gives about 2 hours 30 minutes from the Tokyo side via the Tomei Expressway to Atsugi IC, then the Manazuru Road (toll), Atami Beach Line (toll) and Route 135. That coastal road can run slower than the estimate on festival weekends, so treat it as a range that depends on traffic. For the Atami and Izu leg in general, see our Tokyo to Atami transport guide.
For one or two travellers with light bags and no deadline, the train works. For three or more people, heavy luggage, or a plan to drop bags at the inn before going out, a private car removes the changes.
Don't overpack the arrival day
Getting to Kawazu takes most of a day, so the realistic plan is to go straight to your inn, leave your bags, and see the night blossoms that evening or first thing the next morning. Evening illumination hours change by year; check the festival site.
If you want a stop in Atami or your lodging is elsewhere on the east Izu coast, tell us when booking and our team will confirm the arrangements. Our published Atami route is Haneda to Atami and East Izu; to weigh up the coasts, see east Izu or west Izu.
