Japan Student Airport Pickup: Residence Card and Luggage

· Updated

Japan student airport pickup: residence card at Narita or Haneda, declaring shipped baggage, registering your address in 14 days, and a car for two or three big cases.

Arriving as a tourist, you clear immigration and customs and you are off. Arriving to study or work for a longer stay adds a few steps on day one, and roughly doubles the luggage, which matters when you plan a student airport pickup in Japan. Knowing where those steps fall helps you judge how long your driver needs to wait and how big a vehicle you need.

At immigration: your residence card

According to the Immigration Services Agency, people entering Japan as mid- to long-term residents through designated airports such as Narita and Haneda receive their residence card at immigration (Immigration Services Agency of Japan). Issuing the card takes a little time, and with two or three large cases to collect, you will usually clear arrival more slowly than a tourist. The 90 minutes of free waiting for airport pickups is there for exactly this; give your flight number when booking so we can follow your arrival. For how the meet-up works, see our Japan airport pickup guide.

At customs: declare separately shipped baggage

Many students and transferees ship some belongings to Japan separately. Japan Customs requires travellers with separately shipped (unaccompanied) baggage to declare it when they enter, so that the later shipment can be cleared as such; see Japan Customs. Missing this step makes things much harder later.

After you move in: register your address within 14 days

Once you have a place to live, you need to register your address at the local ward or city office within 14 days, taking your residence card; follow the Immigration Services Agency and your local government for details. Give the address of your dorm or rental in Japanese when you book your pickup; the original wording is the most accurate and you will need it again for registration.

Student airport pickup: which vehicle for two or three big suitcases

Situation Suggested vehicle
1–2 people, up to 6 pieces in total Alphard (7 seats, 6 bags)
Several classmates or colleagues, two or three pieces each Hiace (10 seats, 9 bags)
A bicycle, instrument or other bulky item Note the size when booking; our team will confirm

Five classmates sharing a Hiace from Haneda to central Tokyo pay about ¥3,400 each. For what fits in each vehicle, see how many suitcases fit in an Alphard or Hiace; from Narita, see Narita Airport to central Tokyo.

If you need to collect keys from the dorm office or a letting agent first, let us know in advance and a stop on the way can be arranged.

The first day of a new life is much easier with the paperwork and luggage planned together. Submit your flight, luggage list and address on the booking page.
