Ryokan Dinner Time on Arrival Day: When to Land

· Updated

Ryokan dinner times are fixed. Drive times from Haneda and Narita to Hakone, Atami and Izu, and how to work back from dinner to your latest landing time.

The biggest difference between a ryokan and a city hotel is dinner. At many ryokan, dinner time is fixed: the meal begins at a set time and arrives course by course, and if you are very late the kitchen may not be able to wait. If you are checking in on the day you land, the key question is not the fare. It is this: what time is dinner?

Ask the ryokan three things

Once the ryokan is booked, and before you book flights, ask:

  1. What time dinner starts, and the latest you can arrive for it. Everything else works back from this.
  2. The latest check-in time. Some ryokan do not check guests in late at night.
  3. Where a car can stop. On a hillside the door may not be reachable by car; our team will confirm the drop-off point from the ryokan's directions.

Drive times to each onsen area

These are drive-time ranges from the airport, depending on traffic. Holidays, weekend afternoons and winter weather all add time.

Destination From Haneda From Narita
Hakone about 90–120 min about 150–180 min
Atami · East Izu about 100–150 min about 150–210 min
South/West Izu about 180–270 min about 240–300 min

Haneda is much closer than Narita to all three. If you can choose your flight, Haneda makes dinner far easier to reach. For full transport comparisons, see Tokyo or the airport to Hakone, door to ryokan and getting to Atami and Izu onsen.

Working back from ryokan dinner time to your arrival

For an 18:30 dinner in Hakone, using the longest drive time:

  • From Haneda: leave the airport by about 16:30.
  • From Narita: leave the airport by about 15:30.

Add time for immigration and baggage before that, and you have your latest landing time. South and West Izu are a long drive, so an afternoon landing may well miss dinner on the day; talk to the ryokan first. We wait free for 90 minutes after landing, but the ryokan's dinner will not move with your flight, so let them know directly if you are delayed.

Train plus pick-up, or a car to the door

By train, the last leg to an onsen town usually means the ryokan's station pick-up, or a mountain railway or bus. Pick-ups tend to run from the nearest station, at times and on terms set by the ryokan; miss one and you are changing trains again or finding a taxi.

West Izu has no railway and trains in South Izu are infrequent, so a car from the airport saves the most time (see Atami and East Izu or South/West Izu: drive times compared). In Hakone, where most ryokan sit up in the hills, you can also send big suitcases from Hakone-Yumoto Station to partner accommodation with the Hakone luggage transport service.

A car from the airport means no train times or pick-up slots to fit around. The Alphard seats 7 with room for 6 bags:

Destination From Haneda From Narita
Hakone ¥50,000 ¥70,000
Atami · East Izu ¥50,000 ¥70,000
South/West Izu ¥55,000 ¥70,000

Fares are per car, tax included, with tolls and parking included. For more people or luggage, choose the Hiace (10 seats, 9 bags). See Haneda to Hakone, Haneda to Atami and Haneda to Izu.

Put the ryokan's dinner time in your booking notes and our team will look at it alongside your flight and the drive. Send your trip on the booking page.

FAQ

How long from Haneda to a ryokan in Hakone?
About 90 to 120 minutes from Haneda, or 150 to 180 minutes from Narita, depending on traffic. Holiday periods and weekend afternoons bring heavier traffic into the hills, so allow extra time.
Ryokan dinner time is 18:30. When do we need to leave the airport?
Taking the longest Haneda to Hakone time of 120 minutes, leave the airport by about 16:30; from Narita, by about 15:30. Allow time for immigration and baggage on top of that. Dinner times vary, so go by what your ryokan tells you.
Our ryokan offers a station pick-up. Do we still need a car?
Ryokan pick-ups usually run from the nearest station, at times and on terms set by the ryokan. A car from the airport to the ryokan door means you do not have to fit around train times or pick-up slots.
What if we arrive too late for ryokan dinner?
Tell the ryokan your expected arrival time first and ask whether dinner can be moved or replaced. We operate 24 hours a day, with a ¥4,000 surcharge between 22:00 and 06:00; whether a ryokan accepts very late check-in is its decision.
