Different Flights, One Airport Pickup in Japan? How to Plan

· Updated

Friends or family on different flights to Japan? Decide between one shared airport pickup or two by airport, terminal and time gap, plus one Hiace vs two Alphards.

Travelling together rarely means one flight: parents from Hong Kong, friends from Taipei, cousins from Shanghai, landing an hour or two apart and sometimes not even at the same airport. With different flights, should your airport pickup in Japan wait for everyone, or should each group take a car? Working through these steps in order is the quickest way to decide.

Step one: same airport, same terminal?

  • Different airports (Narita and Haneda): they are far apart, so it is not worth waiting; book separately and meet at your accommodation.
  • Same airport, different terminals: you can share a car once you have met up. Narita's Terminals 1, 2 and 3 are linked by an access corridor and a free shuttle bus (Narita Airport); Haneda's Terminals 2 and 3 are also linked by a free shuttle bus (Haneda Airport). Moving between terminals with luggage takes time, so agree which group will go to the other.
  • Same terminal: the easiest case; whoever lands first waits in the arrivals hall.

Step two: how far apart are the different flights?

Airport pickups include 90 minutes of free waiting (see how a Japan airport pickup works). If the gap between the flights, plus the time the later group needs for immigration and baggage, clearly exceeds that, the first group will be waiting a long time and separate pickups usually make more sense. If the gap is small, the first group clears arrival, waits a little, and everyone leaves together.

If one flight lands after 22:00, a shared car leaves in the night-time window and the ¥4,000 surcharge applies to the whole trip; with separate pickups, only the later car falls into that window.

Step three: one big vehicle or two

Arrangement (Haneda to central Tokyo) Fare
One Hiace (10 seats, 9 bags) ¥17,000
Two Alphards (7 seats, 6 bags each) ¥30,000

From Narita, the same comparison is ¥27,000 against ¥44,000. Within 10 people and 9 bags, waiting and sharing one Hiace costs less; beyond that you need two vehicles anyway, and separate pickups mean nobody waits. See Alphard vs Hiace compared for seats and luggage.

Choose one contact person

Two flights and two groups can mean a lot of back-and-forth. When booking, list every flight number, the size and luggage count of each group, and one contact person; if a flight changes, our team will reach them first. Travelling with young children? Child seats and booster seats are available; note which group needs them (see child seat rules in Japan).

Airport and terminal first, then the time gap, then the fare. Submit both flights on the booking page.

FAQ

Both flights land at Narita but at different terminals. Can we share one car?
Yes, once you have met up. Narita's three terminals are some distance apart and linked by an access corridor and a free shuttle bus. Give both flights and terminals when booking, and our team will confirm the meeting point.
For an airport pickup with different flights, how big a gap is too big to wait?
Airport pickups include 90 minutes of free waiting. If the gap between flights, plus the time the later group needs to clear arrival, clearly exceeds that, separate pickups usually make more sense. Send both flight numbers to our team and they will advise.
Which is better value, one Hiace or two Alphards?
From Haneda to central Tokyo, one Hiace is ¥17,000 and two Alphards come to ¥30,000. Within 10 people and 9 bags, waiting and sharing one Hiace costs less.
One flight lands at Narita and the other at Haneda. What then?
The airports are far apart, so book separately and meet at your accommodation.
