How long does immigration take at a Japan airport? Immigration, baggage and customs explained, where Visit Japan Web saves time, and what to enter for your pickup.
The question we hear most when people book a pickup is "How long does immigration take at a Japan airport, and when will I get out after landing?" There is no single number, because the time is spent at three separate checkpoints, each driven by different things. Knowing what happens at each tells you where you can save time in advance.
Checkpoint one: how long immigration takes at a Japan airport
After leaving the aircraft you go to immigration and queue by passport type. How long this takes depends mostly on how many international flights land at the same time; morning and early-evening arrival peaks tend to be busiest. You cannot shorten the queue itself, but registering your details on Visit Japan Web beforehand means you show a QR code instead of filling in a form on the spot.
Checkpoint two: baggage claim
Next is the baggage hall, where the screens show which carousel your flight is on. Strollers and oversized items may come out at a separate oversized-baggage area. If your family was split across immigration queues, this is the natural place to regroup: wait until everyone and every bag is together before moving on.
Checkpoint three: customs, with one QR code
According to Japan Customs, since 25 January 2024 the Visit Japan Web immigration and customs QR codes have been combined into one, and international airports including Narita and Haneda have electronic customs declaration gates that accept it; see Japan Customs. If you have not registered, you can still fill in a paper declaration, but allow time to queue and write it out.
Once you are in the arrivals hall
After customs you walk out into the arrivals hall, where you meet your driver. When booking, enter your flight number and scheduled landing time, not your departure time. We follow your arrival by flight, and the 90 minutes of free waiting exists to cover exactly these three checkpoints. A name-board meet can be arranged; please give a name the driver can easily recognise. For the full meet-and-greet, see how a Japan airport pickup works; for routes from Narita, see private transfers from Narita.
Fill in Visit Japan Web before you fly (see the airport transfer pre-trip checklist for the rest) and book your pickup on the booking page, and after landing all that is left is the queue and your bags.
FAQ
- Do I have to use Visit Japan Web?
- It is not mandatory, but registering in advance lets you use one QR code for immigration and customs, which is usually quicker than filling in paper forms at the airport. Check the Digital Agency and Japan Customs websites for current rules.
- Do I need separate QR codes for immigration and customs?
- No. Japan Customs states that from 25 January 2024 the immigration and customs QR codes were combined into one, and codes from the old standalone customs app no longer work.
- Immigration time in Japan varies, so what arrival time should I enter when booking a pickup?
- Enter your flight number and scheduled landing time. We follow your arrival by flight, and the 90 minutes of free waiting covers the time it takes to clear arrival.
- Our family will be in different immigration queues. How do we regroup?
- Immigration queues may be split by passport type, so agree to meet at the baggage carousel. Once everyone and every bag is there, go through customs together and out to meet the driver.
