Tokyo snow can close the Shuto Expressway and delay flights. What to check, why the airport transfer takes longer, how pickup waiting works, and winter luggage tips.
Tokyo gets only a handful of snowy days a year, and precisely because snow is rare, the city reacts to it more than a snow-country town would: sections of the expressway may close, icy roads slow traffic, and aircraft need de-icing. When flying to Tokyo in winter, the thing to plan your airport transfer around is not the cold but the chance of snow.
Check the Japan Meteorological Agency forecast
The Japan Meteorological Agency issues heavy-snow advisories, warnings and snowfall forecasts ahead of time, so it is worth checking two or three days before you fly: Japan Meteorological Agency. If snow is forecast for your arrival day, let our team know early so they can plan ahead.
Tokyo snow day: expressways may close
During snowfall or icy conditions the Shuto Expressway closes some sections or ramps as needed; see the Shuto Expressway website for the latest. Airport runs into the city normally use expressways, so closures mean ordinary roads and a journey well beyond the usual 30–45 minutes from Haneda or 60–90 minutes from Narita. Our team will give you an estimate on the day.
Tolls and parking are included in the quote. For the normal route and fare, see Haneda to Tokyo private transfer.
Flight delays and de-icing
In snow, aircraft are de-iced before departure and runways may need clearing, so delays are likely. Airport pickups include 90 minutes of free waiting, and our team follows your arrival using the flight number you gave. For a longer delay, just send them the airline's new time. If you end up landing after 22:00, the night-time surcharge of ¥4,000 applies. See how a Japan airport pickup works for waiting and meeting details.
Winter luggage: think volume, not just count
Down jackets, boots and warm layers make every suitcase bigger and heavier. The Alphard takes 6 pieces and the Hiace 9, but the same number of bags can pack very differently depending on size. Note any oversized cases when booking and our team will confirm the vehicle (see how many bags fit in each vehicle).
A little extra time makes a winter trip much calmer. Submit your flight and luggage details on the booking page.
