Golf bag airport transfer in Japan? Long items are not one suitcase. How to pick the vehicle for golf, ski and band trips, and when to ship ski gear ahead.
Typing "4 bags" into a Japan airport transfer booking is easy. But if two of them are golf bags and one is a ski bag, the luggage space looks very different. Vehicle capacity is counted in standard-size suitcases, and long items usually take up more room than a suitcase does.
A long item is not "one bag"
The Alphard seats 7 with room for 6 bags; the Hiace seats 10 with room for 9. Those "bags" are standard suitcases. List the following separately rather than adding them to your suitcase count:
- golf bags (with clubs)
- ski bags, snowboard bags and boot bags
- hard cases for a cello, double bass, keyboard or similar
- surfboards, bike boxes and other sports equipment

Golf bags on an airport transfer: a four-person trip, worked out
Four people with a golf bag and a suitcase each is eight pieces, four of them long. The Alphard's 6 is not enough; the Hiace's 9 gives you room. For the two vehicles side by side, see Alphard vs Hiace.
Since fares are per car, one Hiace usually beats two Alphards: from Haneda to anywhere in Tokyo, a Hiace is ¥17,000 against ¥30,000 for two Alphards; from Narita, ¥27,000 against ¥44,000. All four of you ride together, and nobody waits for a second car at the course or hotel.
Ski groups: send the gear ahead
Ski groups carry the most: skis or boards, boots, outerwear and suitcases. Straight from Haneda to Hakuba or the Nagano area, a Hiace is ¥80,000, seating 10 with room for 9 bags; a big group with a lot of gear may need two. The alternative is to ship the gear to the resort and ride with suitcases only. Bands and musicians: case size is everything
Instrument cases come in every shape and cannot be squashed. A violin or flute can travel with hand luggage; a cello, double bass or keyboard case is large, so give its size and how many. A performing group with equipment cases and music stands as well is easier to fit in a Hiace.
Collecting large items takes time
Golf bags, skis and instrument cases may come out somewhere other than the regular baggage carousel; follow your airline's and the airport's directions. It often takes longer than ordinary bags. We wait free for 90 minutes after landing, so there is no rush.
