Tokyo Fireworks Festival Transport: Road Closures and Heat

Tokyo fireworks festival transport, using the Sumida River show: evening road closures by Asakusa, crowded stations, next-day flights and summer heat.

Two things shape airport transfers in a Tokyo summer: road closures and crowds on Tokyo fireworks festival days, and the heat of July and August. They tend to arrive together — most fireworks festivals are held from late July into August, right in the hottest weeks.

The example below is Tokyo's biggest show, the Sumida River Fireworks. For other festivals, check dates and closures with each organiser and the police.

Sumida River Fireworks: right next to Asakusa

The Sumida River Fireworks are usually held on a Saturday evening in late July (25 July in 2026), with both viewing areas along the Sumida River around Asakusa. Three things matter most for a transfer:

  1. Roads close from the evening. Ordinary roads around the venue are closed to vehicles from the evening, and parts of the Metropolitan Expressway have also closed during the display. Each year's closures are announced by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police.
  2. Crowds build from the afternoon. People start claiming spots in the afternoon, and the streets around Asakusa, Ryogoku and Kuramae fill steadily.
  3. Stations are worst at the end. The official site warns that Asakusa Station becomes extremely crowded after the show and asks visitors to use other stations.

Tokyo fireworks festival transport: when to arrive

  • Staying in Asakusa, Kuramae or Ryogoku: aim to arrive around midday and check in before the afternoon crowds. If you can only land in the late afternoon, give your hotel's location when booking and our team will confirm the drop-off; the car may have to stop outside the closed area and you will walk the rest.
  • Staying further away: less affected, but roads towards Asakusa can still be slow in the evening, so allow extra time.
  • Flying out the next day: the crowds are that night; a pickup from your hotel the next morning is normally unaffected. For timing, see Tokyo hotel to Narita or Haneda.

Landing in midsummer: minimise your time outdoors

Tokyo is often hot and humid in July and August. After a long flight, walking your bags to a platform or queuing outdoors for transport is what wears people down — take particular care with older relatives and children.

  • Before you fly, check the forecast from the Japan Meteorological Agency and heatstroke alerts on the Ministry of the Environment's heat illness site.
  • Once you meet your driver, the car takes you straight to the hotel door, with no queuing outdoors or train changes.
  • Rest and rehydrate at the hotel before heading out to the fireworks; the wait at the venue is long, so prepare for the heat.

For a group with luggage, the Alphard seats 7 with room for 6 bags; for larger groups, the Hiace seats 10 with room for 9. Travelling with grandparents and children? See airport transfers for multigenerational families.

Price

Prices do not change during fireworks season. Asakusa is inside Tokyo: from Haneda, Alphard ¥15,000 or Hiace ¥17,000; from Narita, Alphard ¥22,000 or Hiace ¥27,000 (per vehicle, tax included). See Haneda to Tokyo and Narita to Tokyo, and Tokyo airport transfer flat rates explained.

FAQ

On Sumida River Fireworks day, can I be driven to my Asakusa hotel if I land in the late afternoon?
Roads around the venue close to vehicles from the evening, so the car may not get close to your hotel. Aim to arrive around midday, or tell us your hotel location when booking and our team will confirm the drop-off point. Closures are announced each year by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police and the organisers.
I'm watching the fireworks and flying out early the next morning. How should I plan?
The crush is right after the show ends, so head back to your hotel and rest; a departure pickup from your hotel the next morning is normally unaffected. Work back from your flight time and allow for the drive and check-in.
Will I be waiting in the heat when I land in summer?
Once you meet your driver you go straight to the car, with no queuing outdoors; our team confirms the meeting arrangements. Airport pickups include 90 minutes of free waiting, so a slow immigration queue is fine.
